THE MIDLAND HOTEL, Chicago, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel in Chicago

I stayed at the Midland recently in Nov 2025, while in Chicago for business. I selected it because I prefer Marriott hotels (platinum elite Bonvoy status), and our office is literally in the building next door. The JW and LaSalle were sadly outside our approved price range.

For anyone who doesn't want to read my full review, here is the short summary - this place is a DUMP. Nowhere near worth the $300+ per night cost during my trip. I'd put this hotel in a tier alongside a Motel 6. I would only stay here again if the rate was closer to $100 per night.

The location of the hotel itself is fine. Steps from nearby Quincy station if you want public transit, plenty of nearby restaurants and coffee places.

My first impression upon arrival was one of confusion. I walked in what I thought was the front door (and actually really is), only to find myself in the middle of an extremely busy bar. I looked all around and could not figure out where the check-in desk was. Looked for signage and found none. I meandered about aimlessly for a few minutes and finally walked back out to the street. I decided to look for another entrance and found one, just west of the main entrance. This other entrance sidesteps the bar to get to the elevators, as I found out, and from there I was able to locate the check in desk. This design is DUMB. Had I chosen to weave through the busy bar to the back corner, I would have ended up at check-in, but I had no reason to think I'd have to walk through a bar full of people to get to a check-in desk. For pete's sake Midland, please hang a brightly lit 'check-in' sign with a neon arrow or something, it's not obvious where to go!! Also, due to the check-in desk being literally steps from the bar, you'll have to yell at the staff member, since the music is so ridiculously loud.

My room was unsurprisingly (always the room I get when I book through our Firm's travel agency) was directly across from the elevator bank on that floor. Apparently Elite status means nothing at the Midland, nor do my preferences in my Bonvoy account. (see more info about my room experience under Rooms)

Overall, I would not recommend this hotel to anyone (unless you can get it for $100/night), and it is an extremely subpar Marriott property. While it was a convenient location for me, I'd rather choose another Marriott option next time, even if I have to be blocks away. There are just too many negatives with this place.
