Macao Hotel in Yerevan

The lady receptionist who checked me in and also checked me out is kind but the rest of the staff at the Macao Hotel are the least customer service orientated I met for many years (I spend a fifth of each year in hotels all over the world).

I stayed in room 308.
It is a spacious room with a separate living room and it has a small balcony.

The air conditioning is excellent and the living room seemed clean.

Alas, the bathroom had not been cleaned at all.

I counted 12 hairs on the bathroom floor and then stopped counting.

The sink basin had hairs (both long and short beard hairs. The previous guest had used an electric shaver).

The toilet basin had hairs and also urine marks which is something I never encountered when checking in to a hotel since I can remember.

The room has no kettle which was not a huge problem as it is summer but it won't be fun not being able to boil water for tea in the cold season.

The WiFi is weak and at times did not function (probably when other guests were streaming videos. It is one open WiFi connection for the entire hotel).

They have a very extensive menu with 40+ dishes but they don't have a proper restaurant.

There is no sign that indicates there is a restaurant though the area has some popular restaurants.

On the first evening I was too tired to go to a restaurant but I was also not courageous enough to eat at the hotel so I slept hungry (I also never ate breakfast there).

As I am environmentally conscious I opted to have my room cleaned only once during my 6 nights stay.

It was on the morning of the 3rd day.

I spoke to the two ladies at reception (not the lady who checked me in) and asked to have my room cleaned.

They understood me because I spoke Russian (the staff does not speak English) and they even asked me which room I was in which was somewhat surprising seeing I had been there for 2 nights and there were at most 3 other rooms occupied in the entire hotel.

When I returned to the room in the evening the room had not been cleaned.

This in spite of the fact that I left the "please clean my room" sign on the door (in addition to verbally notifying them that I require room cleaning).

Last and unfortunately least the mini bar in the room is very loud so I unplugged it.

The temperature in Yerevan was on all days in the high 30's degrees celsius so having a functioning fridge would have really helped to cool my water bottles but that was not possible and further reduced from the overall experience.

After being treated with such indifference it is of course tempting to award only 2 stars but I rate this hotel with 3 stars because the bed is comfortable and the nights are quiet.
