Hotel Im Kupferkessel in Koln

I was in town for the ANUGA trade fair earlier this month, and while the hotel's location was perfect (just a stone's throw from the Cathedral) and the rooms were exactly right—spotlessly clean and tidied daily—the real story here is the incredible staff.

My trip took a painful turn when too many excellent German beers triggered a brutal gout attack. With my foot throbbing, I felt desperate. I approached the manager, Sandra, simply asking if I could buy a bag of ice nearby. What happened next was completely unexpected: she didn't just point me to a store; she offered her personal supply of reusable ice packs and told me to use them freely.

Sandra's care was relentless—she checked on me every single day to ensure the packs were replaced with fresh ones. Her kindness was a literal lifesaver; the immediate icing helped the gout subside, and I salvaged the rest of my Europe travels. Sandra is an angel sent from heaven. That level of genuine, empathetic service is what makes a hotel truly exceptional. I can't wait to go back, if only to thank her personally again (and to say hello to the cats!). What an unforgettable stay.

A really nice place to stay in Cologne. Online check-in was easy and access with the door code was straightforward.

There is no actual reception but there is a workspace downstairs, where I believe the owner often resides.

The room itself was small but perfectly formed, a simple bed, desk, wardrobe and a private bathroom.

Location was great, only a 10 minute or so walk into the city centre but there were other shops and bars in the freisenstraase area also close by.

I would happily stay here again.

I appreciated that the automated check-in was very simple, often in Airbnbs or other hotels you have to go through a convoluted process that feels like an escape room before you make it to your room but here I just got a code, entered that on the main door and that was it. The room itself was small but perfect: clean, comfortable and with good wifi connection. I would definitely stay here again if I'm in Cologne again one day.

The rooms are very small but okay for solo travelers. It is a 15-minute walk to the city center. Since I visited during a rainy season, it felt a bit far to me, but it was just 15 minutes away from the Kölner Dom. The cleanliness of the room was average. There is no elevator, and the stairs are a bit narrow, so if you have heavy luggage, you’ll need to carry it up the stairs. However, in terms of price-performance, it is satisfying.

What a cute, wonderful place. Hotel is updated, clean and comfortable. The host was so kind and even provided us a fan for the room. Convenient location, approximately 10-15 min walk to central train station and cathedral. Couldn't be happier.

Pretty relaxed stay. Check in and out could be done completely online, which left few chances for in person customer service. Location was nice as it was walkable from the station, but far enough away to not feel like you're in the hub of the city. The room and bathroom were pretty nice with some thoughtful amenities. My only quelm was not knowing a lot of the rooms are three floors up and only accessible with a steep staircase. I was traveling with a large suitcase by myself so it was a bit of a noisy struggle to get my bag up. I did try to ask for a room closer to the ground floor, but the type of room I paid for (1b & 1b) was only at the top and I felt like the owner was a bit passive about this. I love getting to connect with people while traveling and unfortunately you just won't get much of that from here, but if that's your jam then this would be a great place to stay.

• No elevator/staircase was VERY steep
• Never saw another guest once

Neutral/ things to note
• They have two cats that you may get a glimpse of, but don't go beyond the lounge area.
• You could check in as soon as you get the code for your door, which I wasn't aware of and thought I still had to wait until the time I said I'd be checking in.

Checked in with no problem, dropped off my luggage and went off to enjoy the day. The room is perfect for a solo traveller. Some doors may need some oiling as they creak. The way many of German doors work (at least from my experience), you should use your key to close doors rather than slam them shut. They served inclusive breakfast which was good: variety of salami, cheese, breads, juices/milk/tea/coffee, cereal, jam/spreads, egg etc.. Would definitely recommend!

Very nice receptionists. Good place, a litlle overpriced but ideally located if you attend a conference in Komed. Good breakfast too.
