Castro Beach Hotel in Maleme

First of all, the staff forced us to leave our IDs overnight at the reception (we arrived at around 2AM). The hotel also tried to scam us. 2 days before we left the hotel, a lady called to tell us to pay a "room tax" which we already had paid on our first day here. We also wanted to stay a little longer, the reception told us 50€ for 5 hours and 40€ for... 2 hours?? What is this? The level of English proficiency wasn't good here, you can see this even by looking at the information papers and grammatically incorrect requests such as "We are kindly request you to...".
We got a room in the basement, there were holes in the walls, electrical outlets almost falling out, very little amount of liquid soap, and an air conditioner occasionally making annoying high pitched noise, especially during startup after coming to the room. One of the light bulbs, the one near the door to our room, was basically a stroboscope. The main door locks were a physical key lock, not card scanners which are commonly found in other hotels, even the cheaper ones. Even though, to activate electicity, a RFID card was required. We needed both: a key and a card. So I wouldn't call this a modern hotel. But that's not all! The bathroom door did not even have a lock. Since we had a room in the basement, the half-visible view from the balcony wasn't great. The balcony door lock wasn't working well, once resulting in a hard to fix blockage. The towels should be changed every 2 days, but there was a mistake and once we didn't get new towels.
The food and drinks were tasty, but we got severe diarrhea, seems like some food had gone bad. The restaurant and bar people were very nice in our case. Also, the "all inclusive" is only from 11:30 to 22:30. You can also get some sandwiches and cookies from 11:30 to 12:30 and from 17:30 to 19:00, which is kind of nice.
There are lots of cats wandering here. I had once spotted a cat drinking water from the pool in the night. The pool walls were covered in algae, especially near the stairs. There was lots of paper floating in the pool, mainly in the less deep part of the pool, it looked like it did not get cleaned during the night.
The only attraction/show here is the "Greek Night" on Thursdays, 21:15.
The location is good, close to SYN.KA supermarket. It's close to the sea, but the hotel feels very isolated from the beach. Taking plastic cups from the bar to the beach was forbidden.
Overall, I would recommend searching for a hotel better than this. If you plan to stay here, and if you get a basement room like us, I would recommend asking for a different room.
