Unfortunately, we had about $200 in euros stolen from our rooms. The door was only openable with a key, so it's highly unlikely anyone from outside the hotel was responsible. While the manager kindly offered us drinks to compensate, and encouraged us to file a police report, we weren't able to get to the correct police station in time to file the report before we had to leave Florence.
I enjoyed my stay at the hotel, but I can't unreservedly recommend a place where I had valuables go missing. If you do choose to stay here, be very diligent to store ALL of your valuables in the safe to give yourself more peace of mind.
EDIT: I am adding an edit to respond to the hotel's comment. While I appreciate their taking the time to respond, I am choosing to leave this comment posted without changing my initial statement. I did add an additional star for service, as everyone at the hotel treated us with kindness.
We attempted to file a police report, but that's easier said than done; we were told to go to the wrong police station three times by different officers. We would have spent more money to change our travel plans and get to the necessary station that we would have recovered from the hotel, and did not want to spend hours of our limited time in the beautiful city of Florence going to police stations.
It is unfortunate that there was no other avenue to address the euros that were taken from our room, but there is simply no other explanation for the missing funds. The Hotel Berchielli is a beautiful hotel with an excellent breakfast spread and a lovely bar. I encourage anyone staying there to use the safe with any and all valuables, and you'll have a great time.
We really enjoyed time spent on the rooftop patio which had plenty of shade to relax. Couldn’t see the river but still had a lovely breeze. The lobby proved to be expansive and elegant. Breakfast was truly complimentary and delightful - a buffet setup. We were afraid of discovering surprise charges at the end of our stay, of which there were none, only the city tax we knew about.
So grateful for the upgrade. It elevated our experience and made it so special. We highly recommend Hotel Berchielli to anyone visiting Florence seeking a truly local experience.
However, the room is a bit dated.
