Hotel New Akao has a beautiful view of Izu Peninsula that can be enjoyed from the room, or from the bath house, which we did not get to do. We paid a premium price about 500$/night expecting to enjoy the beautiful private onsen (we found information online that they rent that for 5500 yen fee) and the beautiful room. Instead, we didn’t get to go the onsen (front desk typed “construction” from computer, another one gestured “X” not available when we inquired, without proper communication) and just got to stay in a dated room with moldy ceiling and bedside lamp. The interior in the room is very old. The decor of the hotel is something like from the 70s, it can be nice if you enjoy that kind of aesthetic. The corridor on level 5 next to elevator is just too dark at night, makes the ambiance very bad. The soundproofing in the room is non existent. You can hear footsteps from room on top. View from room on level 5 is blocked by an old water fountain that doesn’t work. This hotel ruin our vacation. We forfeited 1 night out of 2-nights reservation, because we were too uncomfortable and dissatisfied. Very bad experience.

There were very few Chinese guests, mostly Japanese families on vacation. We were probably among the rare Chinese guests at this hotel.

We chose the Horizon room type, which comes with two private onsen baths. They aren't huge, but they are impeccably clean.

Dining was at Ocean, about a 15-minute walk away. The upside is that it's perfect for a leisurely stroll back to your room after dinner to digest your meal.

Atami feels like a mini-Chongqing, with very genuine and friendly locals. I'd definitely visit again.

The views from the hotel are absolutely stunning, and it's especially pleasant when the weather is nice. The hotel's location isn't very convenient, as it's quite a distance from Atami city center. If you're relying on public transport, you'll need to keep a close eye on the bus schedule. There are two bus stops about a ten-minute walk away. A major plus is the free shuttle service to Atami Station, which runs at set times. The hotel itself has an old-money, Showa-era charm, though the decor is a bit dated. It's quite a large property with several different bathhouses. The breakfast restaurant is incredibly grand.

Even though I knew from my research that it was an older resort hotel, I still didn't expect there to be so many locals here 🤣. The hot tub on the 15th floor was packed like sardines, and while it was open-air, the view was just average, not as good as what you'd find in Izu. The hotel's biggest feature has to be its grand, concert hall-like restaurant. The two buffet meals (breakfast and dinner) offered excellent value for money, even though I didn't find the variety or taste particularly amazing 😅. However, the unlimited salmon and tuna were definitely a big plus.

I really loved the room and its environment, facing the sea, I could watch the sunrise every day. The facilities and hygiene conditions were pretty average. There are three public indoor and outdoor hot springs available for use. The hotel has two guest room buildings with a very long corridor in between. To get to the hot springs or dining, you need to switch between different elevators. When I first checked in, I wasn't familiar with the layout and it was easy to get lost. The dining service was good; both breakfast and dinner were buffet-style with a rich variety of food, though there were slightly fewer fruit options. During the summer, it was crowded, so there were queues to be seated and to get food.

The hotel boasts unparalleled views. The complimentary meals were so lavish and satisfying – after two breakfasts and two dinners at the buffet, we genuinely felt we'd already sampled the best of Japanese cuisine and there was nothing left to discover when we finally went to Tokyo; the hotel truly had it all! Finally, I must highlight the hotel's incredible cliffside onsen. Since it's a traditional nude bathing area, photography isn't permitted, but frankly, words wouldn't do it justice anyway.

Everything was excellent – the food was delicious, and the hot springs were fantastic. I especially appreciated the early mobile check-in feature, which allowed me to get into my room half an hour sooner than usual.

Our planned hotel in Izu was affected by a landslide during our trip, so we had to book this one at the last minute. What a fantastic surprise it turned out to be! We were extremely satisfied with every aspect. All rooms are designed with sea views, which was a delightful bonus, haha! The hotel itself was very clean, spacious, and bright.

We managed to book the family suite we had our hearts set on, and the ocean views from the two large windows were absolutely breathtaking. The hotel boasts a charming retro Showa-era ambiance; despite renovations, its historical character shines through everywhere. We only had a chance to visit one of the public baths, and the outdoor bath there offered a truly spectacular view. We also booked a private onsen, where you could enjoy soaking while indulging in ice cream. We had the second dinner seating, so some dishes were already finished. I highly recommend making your own kaisen-don (seafood rice bowl) with ingredients like tuna, trout, and sweet shrimp, and then pouring dashi broth over it to turn it into chazuke. After dinner, you can explore the game corner and KTV, but do note that playing games and karaoke are not free. The hotel itself is quite expansive, so I recommend taking some time to explore all its corners. In short, we thoroughly enjoyed every moment!

The Ocean room was quite dated, so after some hesitation, I decided to switch to a Horizon room. While it was a bit of a trek from the main Ocean area, meaning we had to walk back for meals and amenities, waking up to that unparalleled sea view made it completely worthwhile! We booked the hotel specifically for the fireworks festival, which meant it was about a thousand yuan more expensive than the usual weekday rates. The upside was not having to commute or deal with crowds to watch the display. However, the fireworks show itself was a tad underwhelming, which was a slight letdown. Both the buffet breakfast and dinner offered a wide and generous selection. All in all, it's a fantastic option for a getaway.
