This hotel was so magical. It’s nestled in the hills of a beautiful small town. There are nice places to eat nearby and the overall vibe is just so cozy. Japanese breakfast room service was delectable , shout out to Vincent who was so sweet to us and had the best service. He described the food well and it was nice talking to him. The rooms are amazing , I loved the bathtub in the room , I never wanted to leave. The front desk speak minimal English but it’s okay if you know some Japanese.

The view at the hotel was so nice, the room was so clean. and not to mention the service, every staff was super polite, we joined some of the hotel activities and tiff was so kind and professional! highly recommend this hotel!!

This was our first time staying at a Ritz Carlton, so we were super excited, but unfortunately this hotel didn't meet our expectations.
Though the property is stunning, the staff are kind, and the food is gorgeous, the biggest flaw is that you are unable to change the temperature in your room and it is stuck at 24 degrees. I'm pregnant and my husband runs hot, and we prefer to sleep in 18-19 degree temperatures, so the warm air in the room made it impossible to sleep. When we called the staff to ask if there was anything they could do, they suggested that we sleep with ice packs in our bed or open the balcony door. I obviously didn't want to sleep with ice in my bed, so we had to sleep with the balcony door wide open the whole night. It was winter, so this helped cool the room down but the wind was so loud so it made it really hard to sleep. Then as soon as the sun rose, the room was filled with light and we couldn't get back to sleep. I think we each slept maybe 2-3 hours the whole night.
We were supposed to stay two nights but unfortunately we had to change hotels after one night due to the temperature issue. It's definitely unfortunate to pay $1,000 a night for a hotel and then be unable to sleep.
A few other things to note:
- The gym is also really hot, which made working out uncomfortable. The gym is also in the same building as the onsen, and the onsen has a very strong sulfur smell, so the whole gym smelt like rotten eggs.
- There are two restaurants on the property but they start at 22,000+ per person for dinner (without drinks). I wish they had some other options. We ended up getting room service instead.
We did like the breakfast in our room, the aesthetics of the hotel, and the service from the staff, but if you also like to sleep in cooler temps, I wouldn't recommend this hotel.

Second time here, this time in icy cold winter, but it's a great time to be here to enjoy the onsen and the tranquil, peaceful surroundings, and check out snow covered kegon falls.
The room is spacious and well maintained (upgraded to a suite), and the lake view is amazing. I'm a Marriott loyalist and have had a few suite upgrades, but this might be my favorite in terms of the room layout, view, and comfort. Lots of natural light, various spots with comfy chairs to relax. Didn't want to leave the room if not for the awesome onsen downstairs.
Staff is very attentive and I feel they get all the details right for a comfortable stay. Bottle water everywhere, nicely maintained onsen and sauna. They leave towels in the sauna so they are warm, which is a nice touch especially for winter.
We had lunch at lakehouse and food is high quality overall. I do find the dinner options more limited this time, as they push towards set menu that costs 20000+ yen for both lakehouse and japanese restaurant, whilst the a la carte menus feel more limited. We don't eat huge portions, so smaller sets or more a la carte variety would be appreciated. Chez Yoshino is a nice local french restaurant 5 min walk away, and we ended up eating dinner there and really enjoyed it.
Also, they now have shuttle bus to pick up from Nikko station, making it more convenient to get there without a car.
Overall a great stay.

I am so glad I made my decision to spend one night in the Ritz Carlton instead of one day trip to Nikko. The hotel staff helped us to schedule the trip even before our arrival so that we would not be in a rush. Everything about the hotel is satisfying without complaints. The room is spacious with great view toward both Chuzenji lake and Nantai mountain. The interior design brings you a sense of Japanese craftsmanship. We had Kaiseki in the Japanese restaurant to celebrate our birthday, the food is wonderful with local ingredients. Onsen facility is also a highlight with snow view during wintertime. Next morning, We walked to Kengo Falls, it’s freezing out there but the waterfall view is breathtaking.
Shortly after checking out and being on the return bus, I found my passport and cash were left behind in the room, I called the front desk and they were really helping me a lot, looking for my lost items as soon as possible. I was quite nervous about the situation so we immediately took the bus back to the hotel again to retrieve those belongings. Thanks for their considerations, so the drama didn’t ruin our trip at all!
I would really want to come back to The Ritz Carlton, Nikko again soon.

Well, it’s the Ritz Carlton, so expect the price and expect the proportional experience! Staff was super attentive from the moment I got on the shuttle bus to the moment I step off the bus going back to Tokyo. My Rooms was impressively spacious and impeccably appointed. I just havs breakfast once during my two nights stay, it was professionally prepared and it was priced accordingly ( very high end😂！）I decided to go on a diet so I can go back to eat in Tokyo, all joking aside, it was a great soul healing and spirit rejuvenating journey to visit Nikko😆😆😆

The breakfast was delicious, the room was clean, and the hot spring was great. The service was really good. The only downside is that the location is a bit far. Everything else was perfect.

Unexpectedly delightful! The hotel room was beautiful, and every staff member we encountered, from check-in to check-out, was wonderful. The hotel offers many activities; we joined the stargazing and Lake Chuzenji walk, and the stargazing activity gave us an incredible view of the night sky!

The room is super spacious, with top-notch facilities and a beautiful environment. The only drawback is that the road leading up the mountain is a bit far. Breakfast is plentiful.

I’m honestly obsessed with this hotel! It was our second visit in 2 years, it might just become the high standard I never knew I needed!
The drive is picturesque from the base of the mountain up to Lake Chuzenji through the winding roads. You might also see some local monkeys!
As you arrive, you’re greeted by every staff member with a cheerful smile. Whisked away from your car into the lobby lounge, fire place roaring and welcome drink in hand. The check in process is something you’d experience at a local ryokan.
The rooms are immaculate, modern and have their own onsen bath. The bed is super comfortable and the views, no matter what room you get is spectacular! We had the Mt Natai view.
We enjoyed all dinning options at the hotel, Japanese style breakfast, afternoon tea in the lobby lounge, dinner at the Lakehouse and late night drinks at the bar. The care in delivering a total package experience is something the Ritz Carlton should be celebrated for.
