Samui Star Guest House in Chaweng Beach

We booked this place because it looked good compared to other options in this price range. The room does look similar to the photos, which is a positive, and the location is convenient (about 8 minutes to Chaweng Beach).

However, there were several issues during our stay that future guests may want to be aware of.

Negatives / Important Notes:

We were told that we had “damaged the towels,” even though the towel in question was already stained when we received it after cleaning. This is not the first time in Thailand we’ve received towels with marks, so it didn’t occur to us to immediately photograph it. The owner suggested it was caused by sunscreen or similar products, so after receiving new towels we tested all our cosmetics, sunscreen, and even mosquito repellent to check—none caused stains on the new towels. The marks looked like bleach stains (reddish on a purple towel), which we do not use.

We had taken the towel to the beach, but there are no signs in the room saying this is not allowed, and no list of damage charges provided. We also tested salt water on the new towel and it did not cause any stains. The towels stayed in our backpack, not on a motorbike seat. Based on our testing, the stains did not come from anything we had.

The charge for the towel was 400 baht, which is quite high for Thailand compared with other hotels we’ve stayed in (many clearly list 200 baht for a damaged towel). It would be helpful if the property provided a written list of item prices or damage fees to avoid misunderstandings.

Another thing to note is that staff enter the room daily, even when the trash is not full, and move items back to their original position (for example, chairs that we moved). Towels were changed every two days. While some guests may appreciate the frequent service, we personally prefer not to have people entering the room when we’re out—especially without a “Do Not Disturb” or “Please Clean Room” sign available. This would help avoid confusion and prevent situations where guests are blamed for something they may not have caused.

The walls are also very thin—the thinnest we have experienced in a hotel or guesthouse. Regular conversations from the neighboring room can be heard clearly, and even people walking past can make the room tiles crack or make noise.

Overall:
Based on our experience, we would not stay here again, and recommend that future guests carefully read reviews and document the condition of everything upon arrival to prevent potential issues.
