Desmond Hotel in San Francisco

I only stayed one night so thankfully I could pass on the showers but this is really a "you get what you pay for" experience. The room is small and the washrooms and showers are shared. The washroom on my floor was dingy and smelled like mold. At night it's really noisy and there was a lady yelling for hours outside. The location is close to everything BUT IN A BAD NEIGHBORHOOD. Be very mindful of the location. The taxi driver was concerned for my safety and waited until I was inside. Lots of homeless and shady individuals.

This is a 2 part nightmare. Part1: What a dump this place is in and Part2: How they refuse to give refund.
Part 1: I was told by a friend that this is a BAD neighbourhood in SF, called tenderloins and that I should find a different place to stay. Upon driving around there on the day of, that is very true.
Drug addicts, gang affiliates and hobo every where. Place smells like human wastage. Disgusting.
Part 2: According to my booking policy, I get charged for only one night for no show. But they charged full amount any ways and they are unwilling to return the money.
The travel agency is kind enough to recover half the cost.
Guys, just get a better place or commute from Berkeley or something. Especially if you're a lone traveller.

Very sketchy area. The hotel had a weird smell and shared bathroom. I loved the bed. It was super comfortable.

Horrible experience.
A lot of homeless and drunk people on the street, it didn’t seem very safe.
The elevator sucks: old system, durty, you can’t call it from the ground floor (that’s where you arrive to the hotel, so you must step up 25 steps with the luggage to reach the reception!).
Bathrooms are shared.
I could hear the neighbors having sex.
The carpet on the floor is terrible, it makes it harry to carry roll-on luggage than on the street!
Wifi was internetless most part of the time.
Staff was not good.
Too high prices for what it offers.

Only good thing: close to center and "reasonable" price.

I have a friend that stays in this SRO and it's really gross. He has roaches and who knows what else. They don't care about the tenants, only the money they get to house society rejects from the city. The have 2 garbage cans on each floor and if its full, you have to take it outside to dispose. The room is barely big enough to fit a bed and they're getting $900 a month.

The sheets, linens, and facilities were for the most part clean - more on that in a sec - but if you're a light sleeper, you might consider bringing earplugs, or practice sleeping in noisy conditions before checking in. Either way, be prepared for noise, as this hotel sits astride a very busy, loud, and crowded section of Sixth Street.

Perhaps the loudest and most annoying noise, though, was the children of the Indian proprietors...who they're apparently comfortable letting run free in the halls and be as LOUD as they want, at any time of the day or night they want. Which is - it bears repeating - quite annoying.

About the room's cleanliness...while the linens and sheets were clean and the overall presentation solid, the place could've really used a good dusting; there were dust bunnies everywhere. But perhaps most unpleasant was the sight of IV-drug user paraphernalia in the room - one orange cap and two clear white thingies (I don't know what they're called) - alongside what I'm going to assume was a small pile of salt, behind the microwave, and obviously missed by housekeeping prior to my check-in.

And finally, like I always do, I made sure I knew what check-out time was long before check-out time. And so when, at 5 minutes to 11:00am I went to the desk to check out and found no one there, I just waited. Six minutes later, at exactly 11:01am sharp, I heard a loud knocking on my old door (it was literally just down the hall and around a bend, within easy earshot of the desk) with a person demanding loudly, "CHECK OUT."

That's it - "CHECK OUT." Nothing fancy or sugar-coated about it. Just direct and to the point. And the fact that it came at the exact time it did suggests he was waiting specifically to do it. Which is REALLY annoying, and obviously explains why I was left waiting for six minutes at the desk he should have been at to check me out.

The place is basic, but clean. The staff is correct, not too friendly, not too rude. Indeed, the interaction with them is minimal. The location is very central, but the street and surroundings of the hotel are quite dirty, and full of homeless people. I guess this is as much as you can get for this price in SF. The place is ok for young people that only want a place to sleep, and will spend the day outside. I wouldn't go with kids.
