Relais Calamatta in Rome

I hated my stay in this hotel. Air conditioning was not working so it was hot in the room, WiFi was not working, and the water would not drian when taking shower (so disgusting). Everything is manuel and old including accessing the building and the room, its very old building. The staff were friendly and very welcoming, they were also helpful with local information. Overall I dont recommend this hotel.

On October 1st, my friend and I returned to our hotel room to find an envelope in my suitcase violently ripped open. The approximately €150 in cash inside was completely gone, leaving only a banknote with a damaged corner. Another envelope containing commemorative coins was also opened, with some of the coins pulled out. We contacted the hotel owner, who said only the cleaning staff was allowed into our room. We asked him to confront the cleaning staff, but he simply gave up, saying the cleaning was outsourced and he had no control over it. Calling the police is fine, but as everyone knows in Italy, calling the police is useless. He initially said he had contacted the cleaning staff's company. We assumed he couldn't contact them directly, but after further discussion, he discovered he had their contact information, and he finally agreed to call the cleaning staff. He then offered no help at all. He simply said, "She said she didn't do anything like that," and that was the end of the call.

We had booked the room because it was a hotel, not a B&B, but it turned out to be just like a B&B. I had to communicate with the owner repeatedly on WhatsApp. There was no hotel sign outside, and no front desk inside. The check-in area was just the owner's office. The hotel is quite old, and the elevator required climbing several stairs. The elevator had two doors that had to be manually opened and closed, and the rooms still had old-fashioned locks. Initially, they forgot to collect the city tax. When we suggested paying by card upon returning to the hotel after our trip, they said it was inconvenient and asked us to pay in cash. It was a hassle, and it was a constant waste of time and energy communicating with the owner.

The cleanliness was also poor, with the inside of the quilt covered in black stains. The hotel Wi-Fi wouldn't connect in the room; I could only barely connect by standing at the door. Even after reporting this to the owner, no resolution was given.

(The important thing is, the hotel didn't even offer a penny of compensation for the money we lost.) It's best to avoid such unsafe hotels.
