Shikisai no yado Kanoe in Iiyama

We were there for 2 days. It was a heartwarming atmosphere. The breakfast and dinner was an absolute pleasure. The food was traditional, regional and fresh. Rice and vegetables were homegrown goods. Full of flavour and a true eye opener for japanese cuisine. We are now in a 4 star japanese style hotel and I miss the food we were served in iiyama. For sure in a 4 star hotel the presesntation with 8 steps of dinner is fancy and it was "good". But this fancy menus are not even close to the grade of the ingredients or the taste we had in your house. It felt like we were part of the house hold for the time of stay and got the same food as the owners would offer their niece and nephew. Like vacation at grandmas house as a kid.

The Onsen was really nice. Since the house was not too much booked while we were there, it was no problem using it (we are tattooed).

Also the english skills of the owner and her family were really good. The best english we have heard during our trip to Japan.

For the weather context:
It was the end of October, so we didn't ski/snowboard. But it's a good time for hiking, since the temperature was between 17 and 25 °C.

Kanoe was the perfect getaway for us. It was exactly what we were looking for. It was reasonably priced, it had an absolutely delicious Japanese dinner and breakfast included each day. They have separate men’s and women’s natural hot spring onsen baths, so relaxing. It’s not far from a main train station and only a couple of hours Shinkansen ride to Tokyo. The hosts were very gracious and hospitable. They picked us up at Togari-nozawa Onsen station when we arrived and dropped us off there when we left all free of charge. Not much English is spoken there but enough to get by. I recommend staying there only if you desire relaxing isolation or if you have other activities planned in the area. Taxis are by personal arrangement only and can be pricy.

Delicious meals and friendly hospitality. They really work hard to give you an enjoyable stay. The onsen is a comfortable temperature and the water makes your skin feel soft. Highly recommended!

Beautiful location, in summer full of insects and tree frogs. The owner and her family were really friendly and helpful, and spoke good English - plus showed us around the vegetable garden! Rooms are comfy, there's a nice onsen and the wi-fi is better than most in the cities. Highly recommended.

Feel comfortable like come back to home, food is good, onsen is good, room is good. If you come to ilyama, very recommend to stay 2 night here.

Great cosy Japanese styled rooms coupled with amazing hospitality and food. If your looking for a local experience in the Japanese country side, you can't go past this. Situated in the beautiful and tranquil mountains of Iiyama, this family run business will spoil you rotten! Just look at all those delicious dishes, where they are produced from local produce! They also provide a number of activities such as cooking classes. Highly recommend.
