Reviews
The hotel itself had beautiful interiors. Our room was large and spacious, with a lovely, spotlessly clean onsen on the balcony. They had thought of every little detail and left us some lovely gifts upon arrival.
The surrounding area is stunning and we really enjoyed watching the sun come up from behind the mountain in the morning.
We made use of the public onsen facilities too, which was lovely and peaceful. There was only one other couple in there the whole time!
We really enjoyed the breakfast - there was so much choice (Japanese and Western) and everything was so fresh. The freshly cooked omelettes were especially delicious!
The only thing to note is that we arrived on a day of heavy snowfall (8th February 2026), meaning that the shuttle bus couldn’t collect us from Odawara Station due to accidents on the roads. This meant we had to make our own way to the hotel, which was tricky as the trains were also not running. After waiting around for several hours, we did eventually manage to get a few local trains to Gora Station, where the hotel said that they could pick us up. Upon arrival, we waited over an hour in the cold for the hotel transport to collect us before we gave up and decided to walk as it was getting dark and the temperature was dropping even more. This meant that we had to walk down a long set of very steep, icy steps with our luggage which felt extremely dangerous. Once we eventually made it to the hotel, the staff that greeted us weren’t overly sympathetic and took quite a long time to check us in. One of the bartenders, who had been stuck waiting with us at Gora station, was very kind and got us warm drinks. Whilst I appreciate that the weather is not the fault of the hotel, we just felt that the hotel could have been a little more sympathetic in this situation.
Other than our chaotic travel day, this stay was the relaxation that we needed after spending time in busy Tokyo.
On arrival to the hotel we were whisked to the Reception desk and had a wonderful welcome. We were guided to our room and they discretely changed the slippers as we were two men travelling. Had a wonderful dinner in the restaurant and drinks for happy hour. Food was great and service was even better. All staff speak English very well.
The onsen is not a traditional onsen but is very nice. Men and women are combined and you wear a bathing suit.
The ONLY downside to the hotel was some of the guests. This is not anything the hotel can do. I was disgusted to see a group of three women wear their shoes into the onsen and then smoke their vape. Later, two men were draped over the sofas literally sleeping with their shoes. Again, the hotel had no control over this and is not a reflection of the hotel but the respect tourists show of locations and other humans.
Breakfast had an à la carte menu and buffet option. Opted for the buffet. Japanese and western options available. Loved the wood fired stove going. Service was prompt and friendly.
Took the shuttle from the hotel to Odawara station - can pick up Romancecar there for less than the Hakone station.
Overall we loved this hotel, location and service and would absolutely stay again!
Our room had a private onsen, and the layout was very practical, with the washroom separated from the bathroom. It was perfect for a couple traveling in winter—super cozy and relaxing. Being away from city life made the stay even more peaceful.
We enjoyed driving around the countryside during the daytime, then returning to soak in the onsen after dinner. Evenings were especially nice—relaxing on the sofa in front of the TV with snacks and desserts from a Japanese convenience store.
The staff were helpful and friendly throughout our stay, and housekeeping was excellent—everything was spotless.
Overall, Hotel Indigo Gora Hakone is a great choice for couples looking for a comfortable, relaxing getaway surrounded by nature.
The room was extremely spacious with fridge, ironing board, and kettle/tea/coffee & water. The room also had a private bath (it did overlook a car park and was a bit small for two people but not the end of the world; there’s a public bath too and a foot bath outdoors).
There’s a gym with basic equipment (1-12kg dumbbells and a set of 22kg dumbbells with one bench, plenty of cardio machines & yoga mats, and a cable machine). They play peaceful music with a nice collection of beautiful scenery while you work out. The cable machine has limited attachments (handles and one ankle/wrist strap only).
There’s a shuttle to take you to the train station (you can walk, but be aware it’s a lot of stairs to go up! It’s easier to walk back down from the train station after your day out!). You’ll find a 7/11 close by and a few local shops.
The food in the restaurant is top quality; as someone who likes leaner meat well-done you will not be disappointed here. I’m still dreaming of the venison. At breakfast if you’re early you might get a table by the window overlooking part of the river. If you walk a short way you’ll get some epic nighttime photography of the waterfalls.
Our room was spacious, beautifully designed, and impeccably clean, with stunning views of the surrounding mountains. The private onsen-style bath was a true highlight, nothing beats soaking while taking in Hakone’s peaceful scenery.
The staff were warm, attentive, and genuinely eager to help, making us feel well cared for throughout our stay. Breakfast was excellent, offering a thoughtful mix of Japanese and Western options, all made with high-quality ingredients.
The location is ideal for exploring Hakone, with easy access to Gora and nearby attractions, yet quiet enough to feel like a serene retreat. This hotel exceeded our expectations in every way and made our Hakone experience unforgettable. We would absolutely stay here again and highly recommend it to anyone visiting the area.
Make sure to take the shuttle bus from odawara station if not driving. The walk from gora train station is very steep steps so not easy even without luggage.
