Relais & Chateaux Schonegg in Zermatt

We spent a wonderful week at Chalet Hotel Schönegg and it was an excellent all-round stay.

The staff are genuinely friendly and welcoming, creating a relaxed, homely atmosphere from the moment you arrive. After a day on the slopes, the spa is a real highlight — the perfect place to unwind before the evening.

Cocktails were delicious (dangerously so!), and both dinner and breakfast were consistently very good, with plenty of choice and great quality throughout the week.

As an independent travel agent, I’m always conscious of service, comfort, and overall experience — and Schönegg delivered on all fronts. A great option for anyone looking for a cosy, well-run ski hotel with excellent hospitality.

Our stay at Hotel Schönegg Zermatt was nothing short of exceptional. From the moment we arrived, we felt that this hotel is something truly special. The atmosphere is elegant yet warm, stylish yet cozy — completely our aesthetic. It feels exclusive but never pretentious, refined yet incredibly welcoming.
The service throughout the hotel is outstanding. The team is incredibly friendly, attentive, and so well trained. The girls at breakfast and dinner were kind, warm, and always one step ahead — professional yet natural, which is rare. You truly feel seen and valued as a guest.
Breakfast deserves its own paragraph. Slow mornings with those panoramic mountain views were honestly my favorite moments of the entire stay. Sitting there, enjoying a delicious breakfast while looking out over snowy Zermatt felt surreal. Everything was fresh, beautifully presented, and absolutely delicious. It’s the kind of breakfast that makes you want to linger longer, order another coffee, and simply enjoy the peace.
Dinner at the restaurant was another highlight. The cuisine is refined, beautifully presented, and full of flavor. Every dish felt carefully composed. A very special mention goes to Paul, the sommelier — he immediately understood our taste and guided us perfectly. His wine recommendations elevated the entire dining experience and made the evening even more memorable.
And then… the spa and infinity terrace. WOW. The infinity pool overlooking snowy Zermatt is simply magical — swimming there feels surreal. The terrace views are breathtaking, and the relaxing spa area downstairs with the saunas is pure serenity. It’s the kind of place where time slows down. Even our baby was calm and happy there — she genuinely enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere.
What impressed us most was how beautifully they accommodated us as a family with a baby. In our room, they had prepared the sweetest little cot with a teddy bear waiting inside, a tiny baby bathrobe, and even baby slippers. These thoughtful touches made us feel genuinely welcome and cared for. Traveling with a baby can sometimes feel stressful, but here it felt effortless.

This is not just a hotel — it’s a full experience. Luxury, warmth, design, gastronomy, and heartfelt hospitality all combined in one place.

We left already knowing we will be back. Hopefully next time with blue skies and full Matterhorn views, but even in the snow, it was pure magic.

Absolutely loved Chalet Hotel Schönegg. The hotel, restaurant, location and service were cosy, comfortable and delightful. A little gem in Zermatt.

Feedback: The spa was lovely, however the hot tub was never truly hot, only warm. There were no drying services offered, which was disappointing. The bathrooms also felt a little dated.

We booked our hotel through Chase Travel at full price, but the hotel would not credit our Relais and Châteaux account with our points, which seemed odd.

Overall excellent, beautiful hotel, great rooms, incredible views, generally good service.

Special mention to the spa that is spotless and exceptionally maintained. Minor feedback: I would avoid music with words or chants which can make the experience less relaxing for some.

The hospitality and service we received from start to finish completely made this trip for us. The staff is the most accommodating and sweet people who made our trip so amazing. The hotel was amazing, perfectly positioned to the town with amazing views, and offered so much calming luxury. When we come back to Zermatt, will 100% be staying here.

Beautiful hotel! Spacious room and balcony with incredible view of the town and Matterhorn. Great breakfast and dinner. Staff was super friendly and helpful. Rooms very clean and comfy beds. The cave entry was so cool. The shuttle service was great. We highly recommend it.

It is certainly a nice hotel, however I see more hype than substance there. It is far from poor, but I found it a little less exciting than I had anticipated. Friendly staff though!

Beautiful hotel located near the train station. You can walk or call and the porter will pick you up in five minutes for free. Staff is amazingly friendly and the service is like a 5 star hotel. Beautiful view of the Matterhorn and near a hiking trail. They have a tunnel that takes you to the street level which eliminates a long walk. Would stay here again.

Perfect location - we walked everywhere (including to ski).
Clean and lovely hotel. Our room had a beautiful view of Matterhorn and was clean and newly decorated. New bathroom.
The hotel staff were very friendly and knowledgeable. Very helpful and patient! The bar on the deck was a perfect place to apres ski. The food was awesome/ great breakfast included!
They have a room for your ski boots - for drying and warming and another room for skis - it’s all self service but really easy to use. Everyone wears slippers all over the hotel bc no ski boots allowed in the halls etx. That took some getting used to but once we figured it out, we felt like we were “in the know”! Zermatt didn’t disappoint! Hotel Schonegg was a perfect hotel for a luxury and romantic week skiing Switzerland!
