Reviews
Big caveat however is lack of an elevator so keep that in mind if multiple flights of stairs with luggage will be an issue.
The overall cleanliness leaves much to be desired with stains on the walls and musty-smelling sheets. There were also quite a few broken items in the room: shower door, soap dispenser, and a shower head that wouldn’t stay up. Additionally, the WiFi was non-functioning throughout the duration of our stay.
The bed itself was also extremely uncomfortable, and felt like the mattress was covered in plywood.
Overall, a great location, but disappointing stay. To us, it was not at all worth the cost.
My wife and I stayed at the Relais Palazzo Taverna for a week in DEC/JAN 2016/17 including New Year’s Eve.
I have a very favorable impression of Relais Palazzo Taverna. In fact, I was so happy with my experience that I will probably stay with Relais Palazzo Taverna exclusively for all future visits to Rome. Thanks to all the Relais Palazzo Taverna staff for making our first trip to Rome a memorable one. 5 stars all the way!!!
The Details
================================
I will get the Bad out of the way first. None of these are even close to being a deal breaker for me but I think it is worth mentioning.
--THE BAD--
** Accessing the hotel is difficult by car or taxi.
** The room was a little dusty and rough around the edges (dust bunnies under the bed etc.)
** The walls are a little thin and privacy is average
So for my first trip to Rome I wanted to immerse myself in the city. This hotel is in a perfect location for becoming a temporary Roman. And guess what … Rome is difficult to navigate by car, Rome is a little rough around the edges, and I suspect Romans have a different attitude towards privacy than we do back in Canada. So… the bad … not so bad after all.
--THE GOOD--
** Location, Location, Location! If you have been to Rome you will already know this hotel is in an ideal location. If not, take my word for it the location is perfect. You cannot find a better location in the entire city than Relais Palazzo Taverna. The pedestrian street right outside the hotel can get a little busy, sure, but compared to the masses around Trevi fountain and the Spanish steps this is off the beaten path. At night we sometimes had that little pedestrian street all to ourselves! See the pictures…
** Accessing the hotel is difficult by car or taxi. It’s quaint, it’s out of the way, it’s perfect!
** The breakfast was pretty good, I have no complaints. It was a great way to start the day. We had early tours booked and only used the breakfast half the time. I thought the hotel was good value without the breakfast so it was a bonus for us.
** The staff were excellent. Some of the staff spoke excellent English, but otherwise we had no trouble communicating with any of the staff. They were all friendly and very welcoming.
** The daily turn down service was excellent. We came back to a clean and tidy room every day.
** The bathroom and shower were clean and worked great. Lots of hot water. Fresh towels provided when requested.
** Wifi worked fine.
** Did I mention the Location yet?! This hotel is just a perfect home base to explore such a remarkable city. And when we weren’t out exploring, it was so enchanting to open the windows and let the aroma, street noise and church bells of the eternal city fill our room while we shared a bottle of wine from the little supermarket across the street. Ahhhh … the church bells and the sounds of Rome. Okay right after this review I am navigating back to Expedia to book another trip to Rome!!!
All kidding aside I think you can do much, much worse than Relais Palazzo Taverna. Sure it’s a little dated and weathered, but don’t let detract you. After all, I assume you are not going to Rome for a luxurious hotel experience (if you are then look elsewhere). And hey, if you check into the Relais Palazzo Taverna and you are not happy with your room … it’s a 30 second walk down to ‘Via dei Coronari’ … and if a stroll along this charming avenue cannot lift your spirits, maybe you should just stay home.
Thanks again Relais Palazzo Taverna for a wonderful time. My wife and I will be back!
