Description

Hotel Green Plaza Joetsu is a European-style mountain hotel constructed in 1999 and renovated in 2012, located in Yuzawa, Japan. It offers a wide range of room types, including Standard Duplex and Deluxe rooms, some with mountain views. Facilities include a water park with multiple slides suitable for children of various ages, a spa and wellness center, sauna, and two public hot springs. Guests can enjoy on-site dining with both buffet and regular restaurant options, and additional amenities such as a bar, karaoke, tennis court, and games room are available. The hotel is family-friendly, featuring a children's playground, ski school, and ski resort access just steps away. While the hotel is spacious and offers free parking, its long corridors and multiple staircases can be challenging, especially for those with mobility issues. Wi-Fi and internet services are provided but have been reported as unreliable by some guests. Overall, this three-star hotel suits families and skiers looking for convenient slope access and varied recreational options despite some aging facilities.

Location

Hotel Green Plaza Joetsu is located at 112-1 Kabanosawa, Minamiuonuma, Yuzawa, Japan. It sits directly in front of a large ski resort, providing immediate access to ski lifts and slopes. The hotel is about 184 kilometers from Haneda Airport (HND). The mountainous setting offers scenic views, especially from rooms with mountain views. Nearby, the Keiryuen Garden features entertainment like go-karts and fish-catching games. The hotel is accessible by car, although the final approach may require winter tires or chains during snowy conditions. A shuttle bus service connects the dispersed hotel facilities, including the water park and playground, which are situated at different elevations within the resort area.

Tips

  • Book dinner reservations early to avoid long waits, as popular times fill quickly.
  • Use the shuttle bus service to move between the hotel, water park, and playground to avoid steep and difficult stairs.

Although the basic amenities were available, the Wi-Fi was not working, which was extremely inconvenient. In addition, the internet itself was difficult to connect, and even making reservations using a barcode was sometimes difficult.

We balanced out the good and bad points and gave it an average rating. We stayed here for two nights and three days from August 25th, with six people from three generations. We had stayed here three or four times for skiing about 30 years ago, but this was our first time in the summer. Since it's a long-established hotel, we expected some wear and tear. The food was average, but it's best to think of it as a cafeteria. Dinner reservations are accepted from 5:00 PM, but there's no time limit, so we recommend booking early and enjoying a leisurely meal. There's a short line for breakfast. Dinner lines may also apply depending on the reservation time. The water park had many long slides, and my second-grader seemed to have a lot of fun. Like anywhere else, it can be difficult to get a turn when it's crowded. There were also several small pools and slides that preschoolers could enjoy, and my 2.5-year-old really enjoyed them. The pool facilities were impressive, but because they're built on the slopes of the ski resort, the stairs between the facilities were quite arduous. I wish they'd at least add handrails to the stairs. The steep stairs are difficult and dangerous for children and the elderly. Since this is a ski resort, I think it would be better if they had installed something like a lift or escalator. If I were to be greedy, I would have liked another main pool with a lazy river feel. Some people were carrying their luggage in camping carts, but the stairs were a no-go. Separate from the water park, there's a small pool for young children called Aqua Oasis, but it seems to be for babies' first time in a pool, so it's an additional fee, and there's no slide, so it just feels like a regular pool. My 2.5-year-old and elementary school-aged child seemed bored. The only thing that seemed fun was the water spilling from the bucket. The playland with go-karts and merry-go-rounds and the fish-catching game in the Keiryuen Garden were quite enjoyable. The night stalls and fireworks were also fun. On the other hand, they cost money. The human crane game at the night stall was an interesting idea, but why charge the same price for adults and children? Elementary school students could barely catch two or three balls. But the older kids managed to get about eight. The hotel, water park, and playground are located at different elevations, so it's a good idea to take advantage of the shuttle bus that connects them. The shuttle bus driver was very helpful. The hotel is quite long, so you'll have to walk quite a distance. There are only two large public baths, so even just getting to the bath requires a fair amount of walking. The baths can get crowded depending on the day and time of day. I stayed in a maisonette-style room, but the main room is on the first floor, but the entrance is on the second, so I have to use the stairs to get around, which is a pain. I wish the entrance was on the first floor. Also, the entrance to the room was terrible. They needed to be more creative with the place to take off shoes and the way the door opens, making it difficult to get in and out. There were a few missteps, but the hotel did a reasonable job of providing support.

I stayed at this hotel on a ski trip. I was attracted by the hotel's location right in front of the ski resort and the hotel's exterior. The slopes were right in front of me, and the nighttime lighting was beautiful. The hotel's interior is unique these days, with an open atrium in the front lobby. The ski resort is huge, but the hotel itself is also spacious, and I got a little lost. The corridors between the guest rooms are surprisingly long and impressive. There are two hot springs, and the water was just the right temperature for a comfortable stay. Although the hotel is showing signs of wear, the price was a package deal, and considering the price, I think it's a very reasonable and enjoyable facility. I think this hotel would be great for young people and families.

The hotel's age is unavoidable. There are too few elevators. Ski boots are prohibited, but there are hardly any chairs near the entrance where you would change. The layout of the dinner and breakfast buffets is a bit puzzling. There are a few other issues, but for a normal ski lodge at this price, I think it's perfectly OK and you don't have high expectations. The number of rude Chinese tourists who don't know the rules is the same everywhere these days.

This is a truly beautiful ski resort, perfect for families. It offers all-inclusive accommodations and activities, saving you the hassle of traveling back and forth. It's a must-visit every year. The room type I booked was perfect, and the hot springs were so relaxing. The service was also excellent.

It's a hotel that's all about appearances. Standing amidst the snow, the hotel is incredibly beautiful, with cute interiors and interiors everywhere. It's impressive to think of the care that went into building it. But! But the room is shabby. The carpet is stained and the wallpaper is moldy and peeling. There's stains and mold on the ceiling. Even the walls, which only have heating, are stained and dirty. You'd think they'd clean it, but there's dust, lint, and wood chips all over the floor. We're a far-from-romantic, alcoholic couple, so it doesn't bother us, but if we were a young, innocent couple, it'd be a real letdown. Dinner reservations were accepted from 7:00 p.m., but by 7:15, all the popular restaurants had booked for 6:00 p.m. (And since we were staying on a Sunday, it would have been horrible if we'd stayed on a Saturday.) To make matters worse, I booked the upgraded buffet, hoping to pay an extra 1,000 yen, but to my surprise, they said, "Today's menu is the same as at the other restaurants, with no extra charge." So, there's really no point in making a reservation. There weren't many items on offer. And they didn't have the main attraction I was looking for. I was a total amateur when I had high expectations for a ski resort hotel. (But NASPA was nice.) There was one other thing that made me wonder whether to complain to the hotel! There was a smoking area in front of the entrance to the ski resort, and the ventilator smelled of cigarettes! It was the worst when you came inside, out of breath after coming up from the slope, and it smelled of cigarettes. If they're going to build a smoking area, they should consider the airflow...

Honestly, it's not a very nice hotel, and the slopes are lackluster.

The hotel is not very nice. Relatively old rooms, small, with poor heating/cooling and poor insulation. The beds are old and uncomfortable, with only one type of thin pillow. You need to bring your room towels to the Onsen, and have to request specifically if you need extra. The restaurants have relatively low quality food, and are freezing! The ceilings are high, so they're very poorly heated.

Hotel service is poor, and not very customer oriented. On your last day, you are not allowed to use the snowboard lockers. This is extremely inconvenient, and forces you to use their paid (and small) 500y lockers, that do not return money. It's obviously a way for them to charge extra fees..

The Onsen is nice.

There is no ATM anywhere near the hotel. If you need cash (which is required for shops on the slopes that use cash-only ticket machines), you will need to take a taxi to a convenience store that is ~15 minutes away. This is ridiculous and unacceptable.

The slopes were laregly closed, but the ones that were open were either too steep (for beginners) or too flat (so that you have to walk/skate on your snowboard). They're built more for advanced snowboarders or skiiers.

The snow was nice and soft.

I'll be booking somewhere else in the future, as there are plenty of other ski resorts with better rooms, service, slopes and value.
