Shangri-La Chiang Mai in Chiang Mai City

We have quite a list of complaints for this hotel. Basically, I would suggest going anywhere else but here. (we also stayed at the Intercontinental in Chiang Mai, which was really fabulous - highly recommended!).

The worst thing was that our room was damp. We suspected it, but it became very clear on packing up and taking our clothes out of the closet, when my husband's shirts were actually wet. Despite being very nice and polite, the duty manager had no idea what to do to resolve this and was very unhelpful, telling me off for letting them know only as we were about to leave. We only knew the extent as we were about to leave..! He actually asked me what he should do and I suggested they start by taking the room out of service. He insisted on giving us a cloth tourist bag by way of an apology. That was all. This is very strange for a 5 star hotel.

On arriving, we had a dirty face cloth in our room, and hair by the bin from a previous guest.

The food at breakfast was generally of a poor quality. The coffee was terrible. We had a look at the evening buffet on our first night and the food was dried out and tired looking.

Honestly, this hotel has a shiny lobby disguising a hotel that seems as if it's falling apart behind the scenes. I suspect it would be good if you have young children and want some kind of Thai Centre Parcs experience, but as a grown adult, checking into a 5-star hotel, you definitely expect something different to what you get.
