Description

JW Marriott Washington DC is a four-star hotel established in 1984 and renovated in 2015, offering a mix of classic and refreshed accommodations in the heart of the city. The hotel features a variety of room types, including suites and rooms with views of the Washington Monument and city skyline. Guests can enjoy amenities such as a restaurant, bar, fitness center, sauna, tennis court, garden, and free bike rentals. The hotel operates a 24-hour front desk, concierge service, and offers free parking. Its interior design includes a large atrium and smart TVs in rooms. Service ratings average around 8/10, with cleanliness rated highly at 9/10. While some reviews praise the excellent location, comfortable beds, and attentive housekeeping, others note issues with noise from connecting rooms, a complicated elevator system, and occasional service inconsistencies. The hotel welcomes children and service animals but does not allow pets. Breakfast is served a la carte from early morning to late morning, though it is not included in the room price.

Location

Located on Pennsylvania Avenue Northwest at 1301, JW Marriott Washington DC is within walking distance of several notable landmarks. The Zero Milestone, a historic stone monument marking the starting point for road distances in the U.S., lies 417 meters away. The White House Peace Vigil, a longstanding peace protest, is just 478 meters from the hotel. Nearby dining options include The Oceanaire Seafood Room and Del Frisco's Grille, both under 300 meters away, and a Subway restaurant about 305 meters from the property. The hotel’s central position allows easy access to downtown Washington and major attractions such as the White House and Congress.

Tips

  • If you prefer quieter accommodations, request a room facing the street rather than the interior yard to avoid noise from connecting rooms.
  • Plan ahead for elevator use during busy times, as waits can be long due to the complex system.
  • For parking, consider alternatives to the expensive valet service.
  • Confirm fitness center availability upon arrival, as closures may occur without advance notice.

We chose JW Marriott Washington, D.C. to celebrate our anniversary, but the stay unfortunately fell short of expectations.
Check-in felt unwelcoming, and we were assigned a room facing the rear yard with a connecting door, despite noting we were a couple celebrating a special occasion. There was no acknowledgment of our anniversary (not even a card). The connecting room caused significant noise issues, including being woken by the neighboring guest’s alarm, making it feel like we were in the same room.
When we asked to move rooms, we were told the hotel was full, although rooms appeared available online. After contacting Marriott chat, a manager apologized and promised to handle the issue, but when we returned to the desk, the situation was not documented and we had to explain everything again. We were eventually moved to a non-connecting room with a street view — not an upgrade, but a more reasonable assignment.
No follow-up was done after the room change, and checkout felt rushed with no inquiry about our stay.
Positives: excellent location, and the bell staff and housekeeping were friendly and professional.
Negatives: dark and gloomy rooms, limited amenities, lack of attention to detail, and service that did not feel aligned with JW Marriott luxury standards. Suitable for a short business stay, but disappointing for a vacation or celebration.

Overall a great stay. Everything you come to expect from Marriott. Great beds, excellent service and perks. Unbeatable location. The only negative is the always dirty and severely stained front entrance and carpet. Being that it’s your first impression when you walk in, it definitely takes away from the experience.

Comfort, luxury, and calm all wrapped into one. The service was impeccable. Room was serene, and thoughtfully designed! Exactly what you’d want after a full day in the city. The energy of the hotel itself felt special and undeniably DC. I walked in expecting a great stay… and they delivered seamlessly.

Exceptional Hotel Experience – A Must-Stay in DC!
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
My stay at the JW Marriott Washington, DC was truly exceptional! From the moment I arrived, the service provided by the entire team—including the reception, the concierge/doormen, and the housekeeping staff—was outstanding.
It is absolutely worth it to become an Elite Member; the perks and recognition elevate the entire experience.
I also highly recommend the breakfast. It is the quintessential, perfect American breakfast, offering a wide variety of delicious options.
A huge thank you to the entire hotel team for making my visit so memorable. The hotel is also perfectly located; you can easily walk everywhere and explore all the main tourist attractions nearby.
I will definitely be back and highly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Washington, DC!

I’m surprised that this hotel is rated as well as it is.

The conference I attended was well organized and the staff dedicated to that experience were great. The stay itself? Yikes. No hair dryer to be found, no fan in the bathroom, the walls are paper thin, my digital key took 5-6 swipes each time I wanted to enter my room (validated this with 3 different keys), the wifi is slower than molasses (and isn’t free unless you’re a marriott member!), the room service food is atrociously bad yet expensive, and the ordering website stopped working for two of the days I was here. The front desk staff treat you like you’re an inconvenience to them (at least the ones I interacted with), and the ‘market’ is disgustingly overpriced - I paid $6 for a cold water bottle.

I would, however, like to give a special shout-out to the rest of the staff. The security and door folks in the lobby, the food and service staff at the conference, Fredy at the shoe shine, the housekeeping team - these are the people who made this stay enjoyable. Don’t ever lose them, they’re the only thing that made my stay a pleasant one.

I know I may receive a generic response from the manager to my review - don’t bother. I recommend folks look for other places to stay in DC. There are plenty of other hotels that offer much nicer amenities and experiences for the same price.

Interior facing room is noisy with a hum, but outside facing rooms was great. Valet parking extremely expensive - would recommend trying to park elsewhere

It's an older hotel, and the facilities are just so-so. The service is good and the staff are very enthusiastic. But the soundproofing is really bad, it's outrageous. You can hear people talking in the corridor
11.01.2025 Guest
Good hotel, good location, not far from Congress and the White House, normal service, not bad, but unfortunately there is no supermarket around. There are only western restaurants nearby, no Chinese restaurants.

The sound from the next room is so loud that it feels like you're in the same room!
I paid for the early check-in option through the official website (150 dollars), but when I asked when I checked in, they said it wasn't guaranteed..? I was embarrassed because it was different from what they said on the official website, and I just wasted my money...? I think it would be good for others to do their research carefully.

Still, the hotel's location is very, very good, so it's great for walking around the National Mall. Most of the restaurants that come up when you search on DC are located nearby.

Think about what you would like to know if you were looking for a review about a place to relax. Please describe in detail what you liked and what you didn't. What would you advise to other guests and to the hotel owner. The more fully you tell about the hotel, the easier it will be for other people to make a choice and they will be very grateful to you!

The place isn't as cozy as I thought. Our server was great. Now we returned a steak 6 times before it was well done... the manager was very polite although I feel he should have done more . Very expensive for nothing impressive this restaurant is not the worth it. The quality of the meat we ate was nothing amazing and it was 63 dollars a steak..

I'm not fancy enough for this place, but the food is good and the staff is excellent. Knowledgeable and patient. My jackass friends are a lot to deal with, and they did it with aplomb.

I've dined at Del Frisco's two or three times because it is close to the Smithsonian Museum of American History where I attend chamber music concerts. The food and service are always good. The ambience is pleasant, and the prices are moderate. It's my go-to restaurant in that area.

Incredible steak. Prime Ribeye was cooked to perfection. Potatoes and asparagus sides were also delicious. Good service, quiet atmosphere, very satisfied.
10.12.2017 Richard
Standard good choice. Staff, good and drinks good. Not critical, but it's very samey and non original. A choice that isn't going to offend anyone.
28.10.2017 Wendy
Perfect! Ran into it on the way from the mall to Capital One Arena. It couldn't have been better. Perfect food, great drinks, excellent service!
25.10.2017 Tashanna
My steak salad was delicious. There was a bug in my water which wasn't so great. Their molten chocolate cake was a disappointment. The manager explained that their cake did not ooze chocolate as that's called a lava cake. This was disappointing! We sent them back for the lemon cake which was good but very cold. Cake should be served room temperature. The manager had an excuse for everything. Disappointing first experience.

Small dining area. Homeless man inside asking everyone for money and staff never made him leave

The service itself was terrible. I agree to acknowledge that foreign workers are less likely to understand their customers. However, such language barrier prevented an ideal quality. Moreover, we resorted to complete two transactions for one meal due to their inability to properly process the order(We ordered few salads with Gucamoli and they forgot to add them up.) I am well aware that Subway usually trains their employees. But I'd really advise to select employees with basic knowledge of English.
02.07.2017 Timothy
First of all the oatmeal raisin cookies are easily a highlight of this particular Subway. This is one of the most popular eateries in the food court as it will be alive during lunch time rush the staff is friendly and quick. Pretty good choice within the Ronald Reagan Building

Lots of space to sit, and reasonable rates. There was not wait when I went in.
