Description

Grettir Guesthouse in Reykjavik offers budget-friendly accommodation with a 2-star rating and a 7.8/10 overall score. It provides Basic Single, Double, and Superior Double rooms, some featuring small spaces and attic ceilings with slanted roofs. The guesthouse includes free WiFi, heating, and shared kitchen facilities. Although bathrooms are shared, rooms are generally described as very clean and beds comfortable. The property is non-smoking throughout and allows pets despite the policy indicating otherwise, so guests should confirm directly. Express check-in/out, luggage storage, and an ATM on site add convenience. Guests often mention a friendly, attentive owner who provides clear check-in instructions. However, soundproofing is poor, and the property lacks a staffed reception desk. Parking is free but limited to street parking with time restrictions. The guesthouse is suited mainly for travelers who prioritize a central location and low price over privacy or extensive amenities.

Location

Located at Laugavegur 28a in Reykjavik’s Midborg district, Grettir Guesthouse sits centrally within walking distance to key city sites. The Icelandic Phallological Museum is 537 meters away, and the National Gallery of Iceland is 578 meters from the property. Nautholsvik Geothermal Beach is approximately 2.6 kilometers away for those looking to visit a local beach. Nearby dining options include Rossopomodoro at 129 meters, Snaps Bistro at 215 meters, and Núðluskálin at 253 meters, all highly rated by guests. The property is located on a side street, and directions with door codes are sent before arrival to assist guests in finding the building.

Very cosy place, a bit small, so I would only recommend it if you're planning to only sleep there.
Got a nice gift when I entered my room.
The location is a bit hidden in between buildings, but you will get a mail with good directions before you are able to check in.
Very friendly owner, and she will contact you if needed.

Basically wouldn't expect more for this generous price

The hotel had poor soundproofing and no front desk, so those who don't speak English well should probably think twice before choosing it. The owner was very nice and let me check in early. It's very close to the church. After taking the airport bus to the last stop, it's about a kilometer away. I took a taxi, which cost 90 RMB.

Our room was 102. King bed. Very clean. Shared bathroom, but not a problem.

The location is the big plus for this property, however, if you want quiet between 8pm - 11pm, this is not ideal without ear plugs due to live music at the local bars.

The property details do not specifically say it's a shared bathroom/shower so that was a surprise. The property also provided the door code to the wrong door so I was glad I had a working phone and they answered promptly to provide the code to the correct door. Otherwise, the rooms were spotless and the bed was comfortable, even though they were very small. It would be nice to have a hand towel provided in each room versus the single hand towel in the shared bathroom.

While the property is located in a super convenient location, the description was inaccurate. The listing states that there is on site parking for 2.50 per stay. However, when we arrived, there was no onsite parking, and the owner told us only street parking was available, which was $5 per hour between 9am-9pm, and there’s a 3 hour time limit, so we had to check in and out and move our vehicle. If you have a rental car like we did, I would not recommend staying here, or at least know that the listing lied about the availability and price of parking. Additionally, we never received an email with check-in or check-out instructions l, so we had to call the owner to get the code for the building, and she seemed annoyed at our call and insisted we received an email (we didn’t). Generally, the guesthouse was clean and had everything else we needed, but there is no hot water.

Find another place...
Limited warm water in he room ... kode lock did not work...no info on where to call for help ...only one shower ..very old shower ..must have been bought on the flee market... if your are going to this city ... find an other place

Very cute and cozy house in the city centre of Reykjavik. The kitchen is very basic but it had all we needed. Room was spacious and clean. The house is very quiet but you can hear noise from the other rooms on the same floor. There is only one toilet though, so it’s easy to find it occupied in the morning. Very kind host, quick to reply.

Good location, very clean and convenient check-in. The room is small, and since it's an attic, the roof is slanted, so it's easy to hit your head if you're not careful. There is a small open space outside the window with a nice view.

Loved this cosy guesthouse! Was easy to find and secure.
The property was immaculate and the bed was incredibly comfortable.
I started with my daughter and it was perfect for us we will definitely stay there again!

The property was in an excellent location, just feet away from the main street, very warm and comfortable albeit the room was small, with a shared bathroom and shower.

A serious pizza to be fair. Great job. I'll be back again soon.

Try the ravioli. Very good. Order a pizza to go. The quantity is so less you would feel hungry soon.

F**ing disgusting. We were sitting next to the pizza maker. The heaters where behind us. The waiter then dropped our childrens pizza right in front of us, told us that they would make another one. The waiter put the pizza RIGHT ON THE HEATER BEHIND US. Then a few moments later he brought it back to us. Claiming it was a new one.

This was a nice experience - first dinner in the restaurant, then cocktails in the bar below. The restaurant is rather loud and often crowded, it seems, which is warranted by the food. Both the salted cod and the catch of the day were delicious. The bartenders know how to make cocktails, so you can safely order cocktails that are common but not on their menu. The bar below is rather small, but we were lucky enough to get a table in the corner with the couches. Reservations are highly recommended!

Amazingly delicious. Get the catch of the day. Classy yet mellow atmosphere. Swanky yet relaxing. Loved it.

Great place. Fun and lively atmosphere and well prepared food. The caramalized potatoes were amazing. We ordered the christmas menu but hope to return to try the duck leg as well. Service was great.

I was pretty disappointed with the food in Reykjavik until I came to Snaps. My mom and I came for dinner on a Thursday night but there was a 40 minute wait at 6:30pm... plenty of tables open but reserved. We didn't want to wait so we left, but came back on a Monday for lunch. There were barely any people there at noon. The catch of the day and the mussel appetizer were delicious!
23.09.2017 Jonas
This may be Reykjavik's best dinner spot. The selection of local dishes and seafood options were impressive. The staff was very attentive and bar staff was were very knowledgeable. I had a small selection of oysters and the mussels with frites. Don't miss this spot!

The food was good but I found on the higher side in terms of price. Location and atmosphere is nice.

Great, freshly prepared food. Helpful and knowledgeable staff. Quick service. Recommended.

When the food is ready, the chef yells at you like your parents would, if you had done something that was definitly not right! ? But the food is delicious, best noodles i've had in a long time. Everything is fresh and made from scratch!
28.07.2017 Katie
Super delicious noodle house with noodle soups with different bases. Very easy to get vegetarian options of all their dishes and they have a good range of spiciness to choose from. Went back twice, it was so good! Prices are decent for Reykjavik and the quantity was very generous.
