Description

Guesthouse Sunna is a 3-star accommodation in Reykjavik, established in 1999 and renovated in 2012. This guesthouse offers a range of room types from Standard rooms to 2 Bedrooms Apartments, accommodating various traveler needs. The property features non-smoking rooms, free parking, shared kitchen facilities, and a buffet restaurant. Guests appreciate the clean and comfortable rooms, many with views of the iconic Hallgrímskirkja church right outside the window. While bathrooms are often shared, they are maintained to a high standard of cleanliness. The guesthouse also provides free WiFi, heating, and facilities for disabled guests. Its service scores well with friendly and attentive staff, although some guests note the lack of toiletries and absence of an elevator, requiring luggage to be carried up stairs. Breakfast is served daily and offers a continental buffet. This property blends practical amenities with a central location for exploring Reykjavik.

Location

Guesthouse Sunna is located at Þórsgata 26 in Reykjavik's Midborg district. It stands directly across from Hallgrímskirkja church, providing guests with a unique city landmark view from their rooms. The Reykjavik Domestic Airport (RKV) is approximately 1 km from the hotel, with shuttle and bus services nearby. The Nautholsvik Geothermal Beach lies 2.3 km away for those interested in seaside activities. Several well-rated restaurants are within 100 meters, including Café Loki (52 m) known for Icelandic specialties, and Eldsmiðjan (65 m) offering popular pizza. The guesthouse is also close to bus stop #8, facilitating day trips around the region.

Tips

  • Book early if you need parking since spaces are limited and on a first-come basis.
  • Ask for a room facing the church to enjoy the iconic view but be aware that those rooms also overlook the adjacent cemetery.
  • Bring your own toiletries as the guesthouse does not provide soap or shampoo.
  • Prepare for shared bathroom use, which most guests find very clean but may not suit everyone.

Terrible hotel. It's incredibly dirty and the front desk staff were rude. There's no elevator, so I had to carry all my heavy luggage up and down by myself. The room was also very cramped.

Convenient location with free parking. It's a short walk to the city center and great for chasing the Northern Lights by the sea. Breakfast was just okay. The hygiene was good.

Great location, very clean hotel, and you can even see the cathedral from your room. It's within walking distance to Rainbow Street, the Phallus Museum, the Concert Hall, and Little Elephant Supermarket. Plus, free parking!

Solo trip. The location is excellent. It's about a 15-minute walk from the airport shuttle bus terminal, or you can arrange a drop-off. For day trips, the bus stop is #8. The room faces the church and has a kitchen. However, rooms facing the church also face the cemetery behind it. Of course, this is quite common abroad. Just tell yourself it's good for promotion and wealth. The hot spring water has a sulfur smell. There are no toiletries provided at all, which was a real letdown. I had to go buy a local soap. But Rainbow Street is just two blocks away, so the location is really good.

Highly recommended, a perfect score! The location is right next to the cathedral, and bus stop 8 is just a 3-minute walk away, making it ideal for day trips. It's very clean; even though it has shared bathrooms, they are spotless. You can see the cathedral right outside the window!

I didn't have high hopes for this hotel, but it turned out to be a pleasant surprise!

The location is fantastic; the church is right outside the door, and I was so excited to be staying so close to it when I first arrived.

There's free parking available at the entrance, but it's first-come, first-served.

I stayed for two nights, and even though the bathrooms are shared, everyone kept them very clean.

The main building has a stove and microwave on the third floor, so you can cook your own meals, and there are shared pots and utensils available.

The location is amazing, the room windows looked directly at the Hallgrímskirkja church! The room is small but comfortable, the bathroom is clean. The staff is very friendly.

The hotel is right next to the church, making it super convenient to visit. All the surrounding attractions are also within walking distance. The staff were warm and attentive; since there's no elevator, one of the ladies quickly carried my 20kg suitcase up the stairs – what a great attitude and amazing strength! 👍 Even though we booked a room with shared bathroom facilities, they were clean, tidy, and functional. The breakfast was also delicious with a good variety. Definitely worth staying here.

While it's a different experience compared to a luxury hotel, the environment is clean and tidy. The fact that it's a suite, with a living room right outside the bedroom, is amazing – it has everything you could need. It's also just a stone's throw from the church; you can see it as soon as you step out of the hotel (as shown in the picture), which is absolutely stunning! I'll definitely stay here again; it's great value for money!

Their Rye bread ice-cream with cream and caramelized rhubarb syrup was amazingly delicious! Their Icelandic platters were worth trying out if you wish to sample some Icelandic specialty such as mashed fish and smoked trout.

Service was quick and cafe attendants were friendly despite the busy crowd. This cafe is definitely worth visiting ??

Food is traditional Icelandic. We had the fish stew there, and it was ok, but not the best we had in Reykjavik. Beautiful location, delicious rye bread ice cream (sounds weird, but it works!). Definitely worth stopping in if you're in the area.

Great atmosphere, with lovely music playing. Very amicable staff.

The food, homemade Icelandic ware, is delicious and affordable compared to a large majority of places in Iceland.

I recommend trying the Rye Bread Ice-cream.

Based on the menu and the smell that hit me at the front door, I was expecting fishy and funky. It ended up being delicious fish, meat soup, and veggies. The fermented shark was pretty weird, but worth trying. Prices not too bad for a huge plate of food.
15.11.2017 Sam
One of the best and most authentic meals of our trip! We got here 10 minutes before they opened and we're seated right away. We split one of the platters with a bit of everything. Weirdly delicious! Make sure you an adventurous eater tho!

During our stay we visited this location three times. The staff was phenomenal and the food was great. Awesome pizza and I'd recommend to anyone who is craving for some.

My 9 y/o daughter wanted a pizza and this place was open after 20:00 so we were fortunate.

The place was nice and warm and the ambiance was very pleasant. We ordered the cheese pizza and it was very good. At only stayed for a quick pizza but it would've been nice to go there for dinner.

Good place of you're looking for something familiar.

We asked a local Icelander where the best place to try puffin and Whale was and we were not disappointed. Excellent service and beautiful food. I would recommend this to anyone wanting to have a true Icelandic experience.

Good service, friendly staffs, delicious food and good ambiance, what more can you ask for? Note that the shop does look small, not sure about upstairs seating though. Might need to book in advance if you have larger groups or want to be seated during peak hours.

Great place. Was recommended by a number of locals to us and did not dissapoint.
My only mistake was trying the shark for the first time without asking how they prepare it first. Iy is fermented and has a very sharp taste and smell. Did not enjoy that dish.
As for the rest - was absolutely delicious. The smoked puffin had very unique taste and was the highlight of the dinner.
I ordered whale pepper steak, enjoyed it greatly. We also had halibut amd langoustines which were prepared immaculately!
Did not leave room for dessert :(

Outstanding restaurant! Went here for a Thanksgiving meal far from home. Did not disappoint. We had the herring appetizer which my mother and husband loved (I am not a fan of herring so I skipped). For main courses we had lamb filet, halibut with langostine and wild sea bird (Puffin) in a wine reduction. Dessert was homemade vanilla ice cream with chocolate and caramel sauce. Rekya vodka and white wine. Skipped the coffee. Currently delirious. Restaurant staff was lovely and the space was quite pretty.
28.10.2017 Adam
I'd give it 5 stars but the salty cod was very salty. Very, very salty. We spent $50USD for salt and we were lucky enough to get fish with it. Although the puffin, potato soup, and horse steak was good.
