Description

Wadano Forest Hotel & Apartments in Hakuba offers a mix of hotel rooms and apartments suitable for different group sizes, from Budget Double rooms to 3 Bedrooms Apartments. Rated 3 stars with an overall score of 7.6/10, the property features amenities such as a spa and wellness centre, bar, games room, and free parking. Guests commonly mention the large, comfortable beds and clean, warm rooms, especially in the apartments which are noted for being spacious and well-maintained. The hotel has a unique onsen for relaxing after skiing and provides helpful shuttle services to nearby ski lifts. However, some guests have pointed out that parts of the hotel can feel dated and that service may be inconsistent, with limited room servicing during stays. Breakfast is typically basic but plentiful, served in a separate building. The hotel supports pets in policy but does not allow them on premises, allowing only service animals. Overall, Wadano Forest suits travelers seeking proximity to ski slopes with self-catering options and wellness facilities.

Location

Located at 4855-3 Hokujo in Hakuba Village, Nagano Prefecture, Wadano Forest Hotel & Apartments sits about 10 minutes on foot from the Sakka ski lift, making ski access convenient. The main shops and restaurants are roughly a 30-minute walk away along forest roads, which can be challenging in winter conditions due to ice and snow. The hotel offers shuttle transfers to ski slopes in the mornings and evenings but service outside these hours is limited. The closest airport is Haneda Airport (HND), approximately 212 km from the property. Guests can also reach Happo One resort within a 5-minute walk via a forest path. For further travel, local bus connections are available near the hotel but do not cover all routes, so planning transport ahead is advised.

Tips

  • Plan your transport carefully since shuttle services operate on fixed schedules with limited flexibility.
  • Bring your own tea or coffee supplies as rooms do not provide complimentary hot drink items or teaspoons.

We stayed in the hotel part, which is budget standard and it shows in being rundown and old, though it was clean and comfortable. The beds are large and comfortable, the quirky retro shower had great water pressure and the male and female onsens were good. It is let down by poor service. The young Australian staff were friendly and helpful but seemed to be under pressure from management to give the minimum of service. Other than emptying the rubbish bin, our room was not serviced in the 5 nights we were there. After 3 days I took our dirty cups down to reception and asked for clean ones, which they were unable or unwilling to provide. Eventually they reluctantly washed the cups for me. There was no complimentary tea or coffee in the rooms. We had brought our own tea bags but there weren’t even teaspoons for making hot drinks. The hotel advertises a bar ‘on demand’ but the one night we asked about it we were offered beers from reception for cash instead. The wi-fi was patchy and the TV did not even have broadcast stations available. The breakfast was plentiful if basic but ran out of some of the hot food items on several occasions. The breakfast room was in a separate building meaning a cold walk through the snow each morning. The location in the forest was lovely, but transport was the biggest issue for us. It is a 30 minute walk on dark, icy roads to and from the main shops and restaurants. We found it almost impossible to get a taxi or uber and the local bus services do not extend that far up the road. The transfers advertised are only available in the morning to the ski slopes before 10am, in the afternoon when the slopes close, and a short period for runs into the local town for dinner in the evening. There is no flexibility around this, and even within these windows we were made to feel like they were doing us a favour instead of providing the service that they advertised. There were also multiple occasions where 10 people were put in an 8-seater van resulting in people sitting in the boot on top of skis and boards. Based on our experience, we would be unlikely to stay here again in the future.

We stayed here during snow machine which is easily one of the busiest times of the season, the team were super helpful with shuttles, info on bus timetables, recommendations for food and general hospitality. Absolutely loved the hotel and facilities, would come back in a heartbeat

The location is great for access to the Sakka ski lift. Unfortunately we found the place is very run down. It felt more like a hostel. There was hair in the bath and a used toilet roll on our arrival to the room which showed me they don’t do thorough room cleans. The young staff working there were so lovely but I believe management aren’t prioritising guest experience and for the price we paid, this needs to be rectified if they want to ensure guests return season after season.

What a disappointment! The hotel is dated and old, do not let the photos fool you! We stayed in the 3 bedroom apartment and paid peak season pricing as it was Chinese new year week. The main bathroom tap was completely broken so one bathroom basin was unusable. The dishwasher was not unloaded and had a one cm dirty water still left at the bottom, the glasses in the shelves were dirty like someone had drunk orange juice and left it back in the shelves, the fridge was not cleaned. The towel rack had broken off and the hotel just left the broken towel rack on the floor. There were holes on the wall as well! When I spoke to the hotel they laughed and said that a bunch of young men had previously stayed there and it was probably all their doing! Well, not my problem as I expect all these things to be fixed and ready when we check in! The clothes dryer also had a hose drained into a makeshift water bottle and to make matters worst the “water bottle was full” as housekeeping had not drained it. The apartment had scratches all over the floor and did not feel clean. Come on guys .. you have to do a better job than this, this is too shoddy, unprofessional and am never going back!, I wished I did not prepay as I would have taken my family and left the next day!

I had a fantastic stay at the Wadano Forest Hotel. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful, always smiling and ready with tips, rides, or recommendations (especially Joanie!). Nestled in the forest, the hotel is peaceful and serene, yet just a short walk from the ski lifts. The rooms are clean, warm, and comfortable — the perfect place to recharge for the next day on the slopes. The continental breakfast is served fresh and constantly replenished, giving you all the fuel you need for an active day. I’ll definitely be booking here again for my next ski season.

Wandano Forest Apartments are absolutely incredible—peaceful, beautifully presented, and surrounded by stunning natural forest views that instantly make you feel relaxed. The apartment is spotless, stylish, and incredibly comfortable, with thoughtful details that make it feel both luxurious and homely. Waking up to the quiet of nature and enjoying the calm, fresh air is truly special, making it the perfect place to unwind and escape the busyness of everyday life. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a tranquil, high-quality stay in a beautiful setting. 🌿✨

The last time we visited Hakuba was in 2017, when we stayed at the Wadano Forest Hotel. We loved it so much that it became an unforgettable highlight of our Japan trip, so naturally, we had to return to the same property this time. With a larger group this year, we decided to stay in the apartment building instead of the hotel rooms (both are conveniently located next to each other and owned by the same fantastic host). It’s great to see how Wadano Forest provides options for groups of all sizes. Last time in 2017, I wrote, “location, location, location.” The location is just as perfect as I remembered—it’s only a few minutes’ walk (snow board boots, and apparently there is some trail for skiers to almost ski-in ski-out) to the Sakka slope lift, which takes you directly to the ski tracks without the hassle of long lines or crowds. For those who prefer not to walk, obviously they offer a convenient shuttle to the lifts. The apartment we stayed in this time was very spacious and modern—perfect for our group of five adults and two children. Everything was clean, comfortable, and well-maintained, making it a wonderful base for our trip. For food, we tried "Izakaya Hie" and "Tori Co" during our stay. "Tori Co" was especially convenient, located just a few minutes’ walk from the property. We also ordered takeaway burgers a few times, which were great—unfortunately, I don’t remember the name of the burger place, but the helpful front desk at the hotel have all these great info, just ask them. Our stay at Wadano Forest was once again fantastic. From the cozy accommodations and helpful service to the unbeatable location, it’s a place we would happily return to again. I’m already looking forward to reminiscing about this trip, and here are some photos to capture these wonderful memories.
