Clean, spacious room with comfortable bed and nice balcony. Great location and breakfast is in the form of a voucher for a lovely nearby bar. The staff are kind are courteous.
However, the shower was broken, with a bad smell, and the hot and cold water are the wrong way around😅 and the staff aren’t always at the desk to help you. Shame as the room is quite nice!

The breakfasts were ok. The double room is very small, but the balcony is quite spacious. The bathroom door was broken, deformed, and didn't close at all. Don't be surprised by the mustachioed nighttime guests in this bathroom (cockroaches). The maids seem to be diligent in cleaning the room, but the bathroom definitely needs repairs, and one of the power outlets is loose in the wall.

On 11th of July 2025, I arrived to the hotel Populus in Siracusa. Prior to my arrival, I requested a quiet room. I was assured that quiet room will be provided, however I managed to sleep only 3 hours every night. Almost every night, it was a drunken argument inside the hotel and every early morning someone was shouting on telephone using loud speaker under my windows, it is very disturbing when you are trying to sleep.

With this problem in mind, I went to raise my concerns to the manager/owner of the hotel. To my surprise, it was him who disturbed my sleep regularly by chatting on his phone outside for hours. Obviously, I told him it's not acceptable, but instead to resolve this issue to my surprise, he became berserk.
He seemed sociopathic and unhinged. He demanded that I leave immediately his hotel, although I paid in full. I felt very intimidated by the aggressive demeanour the manager/owner of the hotel took with me.

This is absolutely insulting to me but he said because I had booked through a third party (booking.com ) is not going to give me the refund and just leave. He was jumping, shouting and insulting towards me. In such extend, member of the public had to interfere and pulled his (manager/owner) away from me.

I felt that this manager would rather see you homeless than to assist with issues.

Taking into the account that I am disabled elderly lady and he is a young fit man. From my point of view, such person is not fit to run a hotel or interact with customers. No apology or compensation or even any sympathy was shown, only aggression.

There were many issues with the room itself, security, and customer service but the reason for this review is to highlight the very unsettling experience I had with the manager/owner.

I have never experienced the sheer lack of concern or care for guests. There is something very off about the management of this property. I didn’t feel safe and had to leave as soon as I managed to find another hotel to stay. Even if this would be last hotel on the earth I would not stay there. It is a dangerous and dodgy place. Don't go there in any circumstances!

Hotel Populus is a fenomenal value for money. You get all you need for a short stay: clean sheets, soft towels, hot shower, conditioned air, great wifi. The staff is very helpful and they can serve a silky smooth espresso when you ask them. The place is very cheap so no luxury is available, but I didn't care. Great option for a quick one night stay

A very basic hotel.
The hotel was conveniemtly located in Siracusa. The room service was excellent. But the bed pillow, however, was very flat and uncomfortable as well as the bed matress.

15.07.2023 Guest

I spent 5 days at this hotel while in Siracusa for a conference. Even though my Italian is only intermediate, the hosts were incredibly welcoming and kind. They made sure that I understood all the entrance and exit rules for after hours and checked regularly to make sure that my needs were met. My room was small but perfect for this type of trip. It was air conditioned, which was a life saver in the July heat, and being on the terrace meant I had ready access to the sunny rooftop and to a wonderful city view. The bathroom was clean and working well with plenty of towels. The bed was comfortable and the wardrobe was plenty large enough to accommodate my clothing. I honestly can't say enough good things about this place. While my work was in Ortigia, the Hotel was off the island while being close enough for a short walk every day as well. Having read some of the other reviews, I feel some things should be said. First, this is not a US-style four star hotel, so no one should have that expectation. It is a charming Sicilian hotel with the culture and flair that you should expect from Sicily. Second, the staff speak some English, but not much, but neither should anyone expect that they would. This is Sicily, they speak Italian or Sicilian. If you come here, you would benefit from learning some of the language. In spite of that, the staff still works to help you. Third, the shower has low pressure at times and the heat isn't always that hot (not an issue when it's 30+ degrees outside), but it is a very nice shower and bathroom. I truly believe that most of the negative reviews here stem from unrealistic expectations. When you come to a place like Siracusa, you should be willing to embrace the differences and adapt your expectations to what is offered. Hotel Populus was an excellent choice for me and I am very happy to have stayed there. I would especially recommend this location for single travellers, for work or holiday, and couples.

27.03.2023 RICHARD

Room and bath were clean, but they smelled of heavy smoking activity. Too cold to keep balcony door open to air out room. No warm or hot water for shower on last day. Breakfast was sparse by all Sicilian hotel and B@B standards. Just a croissant and a coffee of choice. Both were good, however. Shower glass enclosure leaked which is a problem in many places in Sicily. Housekeeping was great. Very quiet location. Location is great for walks to Old Siracusa and the island. Beds very comfortable. Lighting good. WIFI, heat and AC great and work well. All in all, a mixed bag.

Helpful, friendly place. large room.

Better hotels elsewhere in Syracuse
Just stay somewhere else, plain and simple.

30.07.2021 Dennis

Crappy rooms (malfunctioning toilet flush, bed nailed to the wall etc etc) and personell desinterested in their clients.
