There was a fine layer of black dust on the duvet, but the bedsheets underneath were quite clean. The location is excellent, right next to Tanukikoji Shopping Street and Sapporo TV Tower. Three of us rented a pleasant 2-bd unit here during peak ski season. Rooms and bathrooms were spacious. The well-equipped kitchen worked great for pre-ski breakfast and would have been fine for dinner too if we weren't so wiped out after skiing and onsen. Ski lounge is spacious and easily accessed. It's about a 20-minute bus ride from the airport. If you're traveling with more than two people and have luggage, take a taxi. The Aeon Mall Tropical Botanical Garden is nearby. They offer complimentary morning yoga on an irregular schedule, which was absolutely wonderful! The food was delicious, and all the staff members were incredibly kind. Also, I don't think many people know this, but they also have a hot stone sauna, so if you love baths and saunas, you'll find it very fulfilling!

Finally checked off my must-stay hotel! Getting to the hotel from Sapporo was easier than I expected. Zaborin offers a pick-up service from Kuch'an Station. The autumn scenery along the way was breathtaking. This adjective also describes the Michelin-starred dining experience; I personally preferred the breakfast, which was exceptionally refined.

Zaborin has entered into the ranks of one of my favourite ryokans in Japan. We visited in the midst of a very hot summer and even though the ryokan was not air conditioned and we were so warm the whole time (except in the room) we still enjoyed ourselves thoroughly. I used it this time for a motorcycle tour. You have to reserve motorcycle parking, which costs 300 yen per day, but it's underground so you don't have to worry about rain. There was no air conditioning, but having the windows open was enough. I'd like to use it again for another tour.

Quite easy to find, just straight ahead after arriving in Hakodate station (this is NOT where the Shinkansen stops). Front desk is friendly but the English is not very good. Tattoos are not allowed in the hot tub. Breakfast set is cheap, but not that great. Room is quiet but only 1sachet for green tea. Better go to convenience store nearby.
