Hotel La Carolina in Lloret de Mar

We stayed for one night, and honestly, that was one night too many. Within minutes of checking in, I wanted to walk straight back out. This place dares to call itself a four-star hotel . what a joke. I’ve just spent a week traveling around Spain, staying in genuinely fantastic hotels for half the price, so this was not only disappointing, it was insulting.

The décor? Straight out of a nightmare. Outdated, depressing, and suffocating with the smell of damp and mold. Walking through the hallways felt like being in some abandoned hospital from the 1970s. Popcorn walls (yes, popcorn walls) as if that’s something anyone should still be subjected to in 2025.

The room was filthy. Spider webs in the corners (don’t worry, I took photos), stained walls, and bedding that belongs in a landfill. They’ve actually put a **plastic mattress cover** on the bed, so every time you move it sounds like you’re lying on a bag of crisps. The blanket looked like it survived both world wars and wasn’t washed in either.

Don’t expect to relax either the keys constantly demagnetise, the pool shuts at 7 pm (are we children on a school trip?), and the soundproofing is non-existent. We could hear every single thing happening in the next room, and when I say everything, I mean *everything*. It was beyond uncomfortable.

Breakfast was fine, and the staff were polite, speaking French and English. But honestly, that’s like putting a cherry on top of a trash heap.

This hotel should not be advertised as four stars. Two stars would be generous. If this is four-star quality, then I’m the queen of spain

But there was toilet paper wow, you can even hear the neighbor yawning in the rooms, the staff is very unpleasant, the pool is dirty, food for several days, it was relatively clean, we were robbed at the pool, the situation was very strange, the pool was empty, we went to the room for 15 minutes, the staff reacted very strangely, they didn't want to show the recordings from the For a 4-star hotel with no revelations, no fridge, no kettle, air conditioning is not up to the task, no shampoos, lotions in the bathroom etc... Huge disappointment.
I am really not sure why this hotel is classed as a 4-star hotel, it is severely lacking in facilities and service. The rooms are very basic (no kettle, no mini fridge and barely working AC), they smell of dampness like an old church and the bathrooms have absolutely zero ventilation. Not to mention the fact that the walls are thin enough to hear a mouse squeak 3 rooms down from you, it's the first time I've had to purchase earplugs on a vacation. The breakfast buffet is poor, not very fresh nor warm. The pool had murky water and didn't seem to have been maintained well until we asked a member of staff about it and magically the water was clear and filtered the next day. And to top it off the service received by the staff was horrible. Super rude and un-interested by any questions or concerns raised. On the last day, I left some items at the pool to use the hotel's bathroom (all within the walls of the hotel's private, cctv'd property), upon returning back to the pool my stuff was gone. I had asked the receptionist on duty, because the reception faces the pool, if she had seen anything or maybe one of her colleagues was doing a clean up and moved the stuff. She told me she didn't see anything, I asked whether she or anyone on duty with her can check the camera just to figure out what happened. I was told that she cannot, only her boss who was unavailable or the police can. When I enquired further she told me to go to the police as she will not speak to me anymore and that it is my fault for leaving anything unattended on the hotel's PRIVATE property. The whole interaction was very upsetting because of how disregarded I was by the unfriendly staff.
I would not recommend staying in this hotel.

Possibly one of the worst stays we have ever had. This is a 2 star hotel at best. However, I will start with the positives… The hotel is clean. That is it. That’s the only positive I could muster up. The staff are rude and speak minimal English. We requested a cot on arrival and were told ok it will be in the room by the evening. We went out came back and no cot, we went to reception, to be told it’s too late now it’s not possible you should’ve asked earlier, WE DID! We also requested a fan as air con was not working, they would not give us anything and basically advised us to open the window (it’s 35 degree heat, that will make the room hotter!) This is not a family friendly hotel at all, our 3 year old son woke at 8am and watched tv quietly, we had banging on our walls followed by a rude guest knocking on our door telling us to ‘get the child to shut up’ we reported to reception, and they replied ‘we do not want noisy children at this hotel’ !!!! The food was horrendous, all cold and only 4 hot choices (I say hot, it is supposed to be hot but cold even if you arrive first thing to dine) and then salad. It was disgusting. There is no entertainment at all just a bar which is served by the same person juggling working on reception at the same time. There is one tiny pool at the front of the hotel where public walking past a stones throw away from you, no gates so children can run off onto street from pool if you take eyes off them for one second. Only 9 sun beds in total around the pool. No outside bar. The location is close to the beach but very hilly nearby and abit rough looking and run down on the streets surrounding. My advice would be to stay somewhere else, you can get a much better hotel for your money. We will avoid at all costs in future.

We were very disappointed at this hotel. It should not be a hotel but a hostel in the first place. 4 stars is a joke. The walls are like paper - you can hear everything as if there weren't any walls at all. After a long journey, we were found by a flood in the bathroom. There were no towels after the room was changed. The sheets are old blankets. Everything about this hotel is old and smelly. Fortunately, after two weeks of torment, the money was recovered. We do not recommend! Watch out for the number of stars in Spain - it's a third world country and stars don't tell you anything, and being part of the EU can only be confusing.
