Sugar Palm Grand Hillside in Kata

I’ve been to 55 countries and have stayed in many many hotels. I stayed at this hotel for six weeks. If my yoga studio hadn't been next door and I hadn’t prepaid, I would have gone to another hotel. The rooms are comfortable and the staff is genuinely friendly, although most of them barely speak English, but my stay was overshadowed by constant construction. From 9am to 5pm EVERY DAY there was grinding or banging or drilling, etc…AND IT NEVER STOPPED. Sleeping in was nearly impossible, as banging or drilling began at 9am. And, of course because it's Thailand, they'll tell you it won't affect your stay, but it does. Don’t expect a refund, discount, etc. because I asked, and they don’t care. When I requested a refund or discount, they flatly refused, offering only to change my room, which did nothing to solve the underlying issue, since the construction was building-wide. The owner isn’t a good person. I did have to change rooms midway through my stay due to a leaking AC unit, which added to the frustration. I also had power and Wi-Fi issues during my stay. If you’re out of the hotel all day, the noise may not be a major issue, but for long stays or anyone who values peace and quiet (and maybe sleeping in a few days) this is a challenging environment. Just ENDLESS work. Agoda did not share with me that the property would be under construction when I booked and they would not let me cancel the reservation during the stay. The property advertised a restful and comfortable environment but instead subjected guests to a non-stop construction site. Unfortunately, I wouldn’t return. If you stay here, get in writing that the construction is completed, but as a world traveler, I literally can’t recommend this property.
