Reviews
The seamless airport transfer service was our first introduction to the hotel's impeccable hospitality. A staff member was waiting for us as we disembarked, guiding us through immigration and baggage claim before escorting us to a private car. This thoughtful gesture, arranged by the hotel, immediately put us at ease after a long flight.
Upon arrival, we were whisked directly to our room for a private check-in, and the hotel graciously accommodated our request for an early arrival at 10 a.m. The room itself was a masterpiece of design and functionality. Every amenity was thoughtfully placed, and the layout of the space was both elegant and practical, making our stay incredibly comfortable.
The hotel's prime location, just a short stroll from the APM Mall and Wangfujing Street, was perfect for exploring the city. However, it was the personal touches that truly set The Peninsula Beijing apart. The welcome macarons were a delightful treat, and we were deeply touched when the staff, noticing how much our son enjoyed them, thoughtfully prepared an extra plate for him.
Furthermore, the staff's kindness and attention to our five-year-old son were heartwarming. They went out of their way to provide him with games and activities, ensuring he had a fun and engaging stay. This level of care and consideration for their youngest guests is a testament to their commitment to family-friendly luxury.
To top it all off, we were granted a late check-out at 7 p.m., allowing us to relax and enjoy our final day without any rush. Our experience at The Peninsula Beijing was, without a doubt, an excellent one. We wholeheartedly recommend this hotel to anyone seeking a truly luxurious and personalized stay in Beijing.
Service: On the first day, we arrived at the hotel at 2:30 PM. The front desk was very small, and there was a bit of a queue. 2:30 PM is already the normal check-in time, but we were told there were no rooms available and had to wait for half an hour. However, they offered us a glass of juice in the dining area.
The most alarming thing was one day during our stay. My friend and I left the room at 8 AM for Universal Studios and didn't return until after 10 PM. When we got back, we found the room door half-open. We had no idea how long it had been open. As two women, my friend and I didn't dare to enter rashly, fearing someone might be inside. We bumped into a staff member who said she would contact the housekeeping department and then left. We had to call the front desk ourselves to get someone to come up. After a tiring day at Universal, we were already exhausted and had to wait at the door for about ten minutes before someone arrived. Later, the duty manager came and said that the housekeeper might not have noticed the door wasn't closed when she did the turndown service. We were already extremely tired that day and they offered to change our room. After checking that nothing was missing, we decided not to switch rooms and let them leave. However, we clearly stated that we wanted them to check the surveillance footage and inform us about what happened. In the end, even at check-out, no explanation was provided, and they only gave us two fridge magnets as an apology. On the day of check-out, we had to catch a train, so we left.
The service and facilities truly don't match the price.
P.S. You have to go downstairs to pick up food deliveries yourself. The breakfast was very ordinary, more for show than substance, and you had to queue to eat.
**Highlights:**
Room layout, 1.7m deep pool, breakfast, and service from some staff members.
**Lowlights:**
1. **Outdated decor and facilities.** Various 'pseudo-smart' devices led to a lack of user-friendliness and comfort. The bedroom curtains didn't close properly, and as it was an east-facing room, the first rays of sunrise hit before 7 AM, disturbing sleep. The mattress already had two noticeable dips. The vanity table and an old hairdryer were in the walk-in closet. The toilet was also an old model, and the showerhead felt equally antique. The seemingly sturdy guest room door couldn't block out the laughter and chatter from the opposite room, indicating poor sound insulation. After turning on the hot air conditioning, a strange, spooky rattling sound, likely from leaking pipes, started, forcing me to turn it off… 'Old money' doesn't equal 'old and outdated'. The Peninsula Beijing seems to misunderstand 'old money', perhaps catering more to guests from smaller cities who are easier to impress.
2. **Confusing room details.** There was no mouthwash, a basic toiletry, in the room, and the water stains on the toothbrush cups also showed their age… Even stranger, the desk had a printer but no kettle. There were tea sets and green tea – are guests expected to cold brew them?! I called, and they said anything could be delivered to the room, but do these luxury hotels deliberately omit regular provisions?
3. **Welcome fruit lacked sincerity.** It was seasonal but felt like an obligation rather than a genuine welcome. Three Fuji apples? With an explanation written beside them? This felt like the kind of fruit an Atour Hotel would offer… Seasonal fruits could have included blackberries, raspberries, and strawberries, especially during Chinese New Year. At the very least, tangerines symbolizing good fortune should have been offered!
4. **Inconsistent service.** From the stiff, almost challenging questions during check-in to the meticulous and thoughtful care during check-out, it was a 'floor to ceiling' experience. The breakfast staff were also excellent and well-trained. The concierge staff were relatively proactive but lacked attention to detail. Some suitcases weren't multi-directional, only designed to be pulled in one way, but they were still roughly dragged in three other directions. Sigh… The service industry in the North, especially in Beijing hotels, really needs to learn from the South. It often feels like guests are begging to stay at their hotels, rather than the hotel prioritizing guest happiness and comfort. If that's the case, they might as well close down and stop trying to make money from guests.
In summary, if I hadn't used over a hundred thousand Trip.com points to offset the room fee, the roughly 3000 RMB price would have been extremely poor value for money. If the hotel were to further update its facilities and improve its overall service level, capability, and willingness, I might consider staying again…
