Description

Reykjavik Peace Center is a three-star hotel located in the Breidholt district of Reykjavik, offering a range of room types including Small Double, Standard Single, Standard Double, and Family Quadruple rooms. The building is notable for its eclectic library featuring books in various languages and a surreal collection of decorative items, adding unique character to the stay. Guests have access to shared kitchen facilities, a restaurant, free parking, WiFi, and a garden area. The hotel operates as a self-service facility with no on-site staff, and check-in is handled remotely by phone. The water supply includes geothermal hot water with a distinct sulphur smell, and pets are allowed on request. While the hotel provides basic comforts such as heating and family rooms, reviews indicate maintenance and cleanliness issues, particularly in kitchen areas and shared bathrooms.

Reykjavik Peace Center is situated in a quiet residential area of Breidholt, approximately 5 km from Reykjavik Domestic Airport (RKV). The city center is reachable by bus, though the journey takes around 40-50 minutes, making a car advisable for easier access. One notable nearby point of interest is the Kopavogur Natural History Museum, located about 3.3 km away, which offers free exhibits on Icelandic flora and fauna. The location offers ample free parking but is considered somewhat remote for those relying on public transportation.

This would be an atmospheric building and could facilitate guests meeting and mingling, if only it were maintained better. I liked the largish and eclectic library, with a truly surreal selection of books in various languages. There is a nice sitting area on the top floor. Some of the decorative items were also pleasantly surreal: for example, a plastic cube commemorating a May 1977 IBM S/32 and S/34 user forum held in Húsavík (of all places), personalised to an ÁstÞór Magnússon.

However, most of the kitchen appliances either don't work or are so dirty/grimy that I didn't feel like using them (for example, while there is no toaster, there was a sandwich maker with the non-stick coating flaking all over; the oven looked like it hadn't been cleaned in years; one of the fridges had mould in the deep freeze; the dishwasher was broken, sealed with duct tape, and had obviously been like that for weeks). In one of the bathrooms, the trash can was overflowing. The hot water has a distinct sulphur smell (probably due to geothermal heating, so at least it's renewable); this would be OK, but in the downstairs kitchen you can't get really cold water, so all water smells of sulphur.
There is poorly concealed junk all over and around the property, making the outdoor areas unusable.
It seemed there was someone living in one of the rooms permanently, with a baby that cried often.
In the upstairs kitchenette, there is only a table so low it's almost lower than the chairs, so barely suitable for eating (its legs are balanced by bits of paper stuck under them). This same kitchenette smelled of mould, even though it had just been "cleaned" (which seems to amount to little more than vacuuming).
The locks on the rooms have two settings: either you can't lock them at all, or the door locks automatically when you close it, allowing you to lock yourself out (in which case you can wait hours for help to arrive - saw this happen to a couple).
The windows were so dirty it amounted to a layer of soundproofing.
Many of the blinds were missing their pull string.
The walls are thin: another guest was having a very noisy bathroom session next door and it was as if he were with us in the bedroom.
The kitchens were full of food items apparently left by previous guests, but there was very little cutlery (no teaspoons at all, for example).

The hotel is located not far from the city center, and the overall environment is acceptable. However, the main issues are:

1) This is a converted youth hostel! The beds are incredibly small! There's a shared bathroom and shared shower! It smells foul!

2) There are no toiletries provided, only toilet paper.

3) There are fleas! There are bed bugs! It's terrifying! The sheets and blankets are all dark-colored! You can't see them at all!

Defend against this hotel! Defend against this hotel!

Needs some improvement with kitchen supplies. Not too much of glasses for drinks. Just beer or another beverage glass

Good location, I will choose again this property

The bed is smelly and kitchen is dirty. I saw the review from 9 months ago said there were no spoons to use, until now there are still no spoons. The worst accommodation in Iceland during 2 weeks travel.

Good basic accomadation
Good value for money but this is not a luxury hotel. Buses to city center nearby but it is out of town. Plenty of parking. A bit slow at providing us with room access details.

It was a different experience with no person to contact regarding questions. Questionable neighborhood, but in the end it was OK.

Curious stay, because check-in simply happened by phone for us to communicate that we’d arrived, to get the code to enter, and to know what our room number was. The place is clean and it’s a big three-floor house in the outskirts of Reykjavik, which is an interesting area to stay in, too. It’s right next to a big park and a school, very quiet and cute, and there are two huge and very soft cats in the yard. The house is interesting to see, there are plenty of books and several bookshelves with interesting political and cultural themed books. There was a couple having breakfast in the morning with us and we had the surprise of a coffee machine and various kitchen equipment and ingredients at our disposal. An interesting thing was the shower, which, at least in July 2025 and on the ground floor, seemed to give only thermal water: no cold water (unlike in the sink, of course), but only hot water, ranging from boiling hot to temperature of the sun hot – and of sulphuric smell. Pretty interesting if indeed it was genuine thermal water coming out of there. Anyway, it’s nice to travel and to stay in a house that feels like a real house, and with other fellow travelers in other rooms. We only stayed one night and we didn’t understand what the deal with the “peace center” is and what the place is and means exactly, but we liked it!!!

This is a "self-help" facility. There is no staff. My room was clean, quiet, and comfortable. But shared bathroom and kitchen could use some TLC.
The location is great if you have a car, but way out from the center (40-50 minutes by bus), so beware.

Charming room in a charming house with clean sheets and simple living setup in a shared group house space. We were unsure of which room we were in since we made the reservation three months in advance, but found the original confirmation email which sorted it all out.
