Description

Reykjavik Domes offers a unique glamping experience in Iceland with accommodations in dome-shaped units including Standard Dome, Deluxe Dome, and Double Suite options. Each dome features amenities such as private hot tubs, fireplaces, and kitchenettes, providing a cozy and self-contained stay. Guests have access to shared facilities like bathrooms and showers, though some domes have their own private amenities. The property includes a garden, terrace, bar, and free parking, with WiFi available throughout. Check-in is express and contactless, as there is no traditional reception. Pets are not allowed, and the hotel requires a deposit payable by credit card. The accommodation is praised for comfortable beds, good heating, and scenic views, though some guests note that the dome’s windows are not fully transparent and lighting near the domes can interfere with aurora viewing. Overall, it has a solid 8.6/10 rating reflecting cleanliness, amenities, location, and service.

Location

Reykjavik Domes is situated about 6 km from Reykjavik Domestic Airport (RKV) and approximately a 20-minute drive to downtown Reykjavik. The location is somewhat remote, positioned near an activity center with mini golf and paintball facilities. The Imagine Peace Tower on Viðey Island is about 3.1 km away, serving as a notable nearby landmark. Guests should note the roads can be challenging for luggage handling, especially in snowy conditions. The site lies between urban access and open natural surroundings, with the nearest petrol station and shops roughly an 8-minute walk away.

Tips

  • Arrange your taxi rides to and from Reykjavik Domes in advance to avoid waits, as local taxi services recommend booking the night before.
  • Pack light or be prepared for carrying luggage up snowy stairs, since luggage storage is not reliably available and road access can be difficult.
  • If you plan to watch the northern lights, consider walking 100 meters away from the domes to avoid nearby bright lights that may affect visibility.

Very cool, quiet place. Downtown is a 20 minute drive away. 40 to Thingavellir park. There's no reception, but check-in was easy. Bed and pillow were comfortable (subjective). Hot tub was great since it was snowing. We had a great time.

The official website advertised luggage storage, but it wasn't available, completely disrupting my travel plans. The staff's service was also very poor. The location is remote, with no proper roads for loading and unloading luggage; I had to carry heavy luggage up stairs covered in snow. However, the room was beautifully decorated, the heating was good, and the bathtub was nice.

This was WAY overpriced for what it was. I didn't expect it to be so close to the freeway. The windows weren't even see through. This honestly felt like a scam

We recently stayed at the Krafla dome, and noticed there were strings of bright white lights running near the walkways to our dome and the other dome to the right of the walkway directly in front of the large viewing window. The first night we stayed there the skies were cloudy, and we assumed the lights would be on a timer, as they ruined the ability to see the night sky and lit up the inside of the dome during the night. They never turned off. In the morning, my wife was annoyed, and I told her I would just unplug them the next night as we wanted to see the northern lights, but we decided it was better to ask for them to be turned off instead of doing that ourselves. We emailed, the response was we could not turn the lights off and they needed to stay on. I understand that the ability to see the northern lights is dependent on weather and local conditions, which is why we stayed two nights. We were able to walk 100 meters down the road away (the second night) from the light pollution, just past the parking and the northern lights were visible as the skies were clear. These lights ruined our ability to see the lights from inside the dome, the main reason for us choosing to stay here. Had the weather prevented us from seeing it, it was totally understandable, and that is why we stayed 2 nights instead of one to double our chances of a clear night sky. This new or permanent addition ruined our experience and defeated the purpose of paying almost to $500/night.

Stayed for 1 night as a family of 4 in the Krafla Dome. Lovely experience, nice and cosy and well equipped. Hot tub needed topped up with water and 2 men came within 5-10 minutes after I phoned and topped it up. Would definitely recommend a stay here, it was a nice way to end our busy 4 days exploring this beautiful country.

I was expecting rustic but at least thought it would have a door. Nice place, good bed, warm. Wood stove even though we found out wood is a premium in iceland.

Clean room, amazing views, comfy beds. We enjoyed the extra touch of champagne and macaroons left for us. Coffee was also there, no need to purchase and bring with you. The code entry for the door worked well. And hreyfill taxi service knows how to get you to and from the Domes and Reykjavik. Be sure to schedule with the taxi the night before you want to leave to avoid a wait.

The bed was heavenly the room was well thought out and surprisingly felt spacious. The view out the igloo was worthy the price.

Easy to access and a fun space. Really enjoyed the private hot tub in the back for the dome. Everything was great.

The Dome itself was very clean and the multiple heaters and fireplace kept the Dome comfy but it is on the property of a (possibly abandoned) activity center that includes mini golf, paintball, darts, etc and is in a somewhat isolated part of town (none of which was mentioned in the booking). The door to the shared showers did not open and conversely, the main door to the shared bathrooms did not actually lock. With all of that said, however, my main contention with the property is the security system in the Dome itself. Upon arrival, the Dome was supposed to be armed but it was not and despite multiple attempts of trying to arm the Dome while inside, I was unable to do so. Furthermore, while I understand this is meant to be a glamping experience, the booking made it seem as though there was an actual door to the Dome (it states “keys for the dome, shared eating area, shared bathrooms, and shared showers).
