Kleoniki Mare Hotel in Rethymno

Our stay was great until we returned to our apartment on the 5th day to find that our room had been entered and my watch had been stolen from the bedside table drawer, there was no sign of any forced entry with both sliding and main doors locked. All of the drawers had been opened and left only half closed. We reported it immediately to the lady on reception who came up to take some pictures and then said she’d contact the owner. The owner’s response was pretty much that it wouldn’t be possible for anyone to enter the room as the only people with a key were the reception staff and cleaner but that I was welcome to contact the police if I wanted! Not being a Greek speaker and not wanting the holiday ruined anymore than it already had been I chose not to. I have to say that I was very disappointed at the owner’s reaction as I feel that it should be up to them to contact the police, however they chose not to even make contact with us. Maria on reception tried to be as helpful as possible but there wasn’t much she could do.
We’ve travelled the Greek islands extensively and have never come across anything like this so hopefully this is an isolated incident. The hotel itself is perfectly situated and adequate as a base, I would however recommend using the safe (wish I’d taken my own advice!)
