Reviews
We stayed at Deewana Plaza, Phuket for 3 nights (3 rooms), and I can confidently say this was the worst hotel experience I’ve had in 20 years of travelling.
At check-in, staff acted nice, but during checkout their behavior completely changed. They charged 200 Baht for a towel that had some hair color marks from my wife — as if towels are not meant for guests to use. Yes, they literally SELL TOWELS to guests. First, they said the towel needs “deep cleaning”, then they said it will be “thrown away”, and when we said throw it in front of us, they refused and instead gave us the towel and still charged us. Completely absurd and unethical.
As if that wasn’t bad enough, they charged 20 Baht for a single broken glass by our kids, which is fine — but the staff behaved like we committed a crime. Their attitude was arrogant, accusatory, and flat-out rude. Zero hospitality, zero respect, and zero professionalism.
After traveling across so many countries and hotels for two decades, I have never seen a hotel treat guests this badly or charge for basic amenities. What’s the point of providing towels if guests get punished for using them?
I do NOT recommend this hotel to anyone.
There are countless better hotels in Phuket where you will be treated like a guest, not like a problem.
Avoid Deewana Plaza if you want a stress-free stay.
Thank you for replying, but your explanation does not match what actually happened.
This was not “damage” — it was a normal towel with hair color marks. After a normal home wash, the towel is 100% clean and usable. I still have the towel and can share pictures anytime. So please don’t say it needed “deep cleaning” or “throwing away”. That statement was false, and it feels like an excuse to charge guests.
In my 20+ years of travel, no hotel has ever charged me for using a towel. Towels are amenities, not showroom pieces. The changing stories (“deep clean needed → must throw away → here, take the towel”) made it very clear that the goal was to find a reason to charge us.
The same happened with the broken glass — the issue is not the 20 THB, but the rude, accusing tone as if we were criminals. Hospitality should not disappear the moment money is involved.
It genuinely feels like this hotel tries to recover money by falsely blaming guests for “damage” that is not real. If charging for towels that can be cleaned normally is your policy, then guests deserve to know that before booking, not at checkout when they are cornered.
I hope other travelers read this before booking. What happened to us felt less like customer service and more like being taken advantage of.
The hotel’s location is good, with easy access to the beach, restaurants, shopping and nightlife (if that’s what you want). Our rooms on the 6th floor overlooked the hut bars, which were extremely loud into the early hours of the morning (sometimes until 3am). On two occasions we were also woken during the night by people banging on room doors (6th floor) presumably returning from a night out).
One of the features that influenced our decision to book this hotel was the advertised pool bar. Unfortunately, the photos are a little misleading — it’s essentially a seated area within the pool rather than a true swim-up bar. You can still order food and drinks poolside from the restaurant, and the food was good. The cocktails, however, were average. It’s also worth noting that you can’t charge poolside purchases to your room unless you’ve already deposited cash to your room account, so make sure you carry cash. We’ve travelled in Thailand quite a bit and this was the first time we’ve encountered this system.
Our kids enjoyed the pool and waterslides and were happy to spend most of the day there. The only downside was that the pool closes at 8pm, which felt quite early. Especially when walking back from dinner in the heat, an evening swim would have been perfect.
Breakfast was reasonable with plenty of options, especially for families with picky eaters. The staff were nice and willing to help when asked.
We did attempt to book a tour through the hotel, but unfortunately the staff member assigned to this role that day didn’t speak enough English for us to complete the booking, so we ended up organising it online ourselves.
While the hotel obviously can’t control the behaviour of guests, there were several instances during our stay where the behaviour of other guests impacted the overall experience. We were frequently pushed in front of while waiting for breakfast or the lift, and on one occasion the lift doors were closed on us as we approached by other guests. My daughter was sitting on a lounge by the pool (fully clothed) enjoying the sun when another guest aggressively told her to move because she wasn’t swimming — despite that guest not swimming either. My 8-year-old had also just gone down the waterslide and barely had time to move away before an adult slid down and landed directly on top of her, with no apology or check to see if she was okay.
Overall, our stay was pleasant. However, we’ve travelled to Thailand enough times to know what we personally enjoy in accommodation, and unfortunately this hotel didn’t quite hit the mark for us to justify the high price tag.
Tip for booking: request a pool-view room, which may help reduce the street noise from the bars. I’m writing this at 2:30am on our checkout night because the noise is still keeping me awake.
They told us there were no other rooms available because the hotel was full. Then, shockingly, a staff member took my daughter’s and my friend’s phones, scanned the QR code, and posted a 5-star review themselves. My friend does not speak English and thought they were setting up the Wi-Fi. We were forced to accept a room we did not book and to leave a positive review — it felt like extortion and was handled very rudely.
That same night, around midnight, someone opened our room door. We were terrified. We immediately got up, but there was no one in the hallway. I went to reception, and the manager checked the cameras and confirmed it was an employee. A simple apology and explanation at the moment would have been the minimum, but that did not happen.
The hotel is located in Patong, and from the first moment we disliked the area: trash everywhere, bad smells, unbearable traffic, and overcrowded with people. The area is clearly oriented toward partying, alcohol, and chaos, with many men alone and women offering services openly. Although the hotel facilities are nice, it is completely immersed in this dirty and noisy environment. We even saw a rat on our private terrace.
The hotel is very open, with no real separation or privacy. If you are looking for rest, peace, or a paradisiacal beach experience, this is not the place.
The breakfast was very varied and probably the best thing about the hotel.
I would not return to this hotel nor to Patong.
The room itself was spacious. It would have been better if all staff understood English more clearly, as it was very difficult to make them understand with some staf what we were asking. We requested some kit multiple times during our stay which we never received- likely due to the language barrier.
Additionally, room service needs improvement. The bathtub drain was clogged, with a bunch of hair stuck in it.Overall it was a good stay kids enjoyed the pool and variety of food.
Although we arrived before the 3 PM check-in time and had to wait for our rooms, the staff kindly allowed us to use the pool. Throughout our stay, the staff were very polite and responded quickly to any request. For example, when one of our rooms had mosquitoes because the balcony door was left open, they immediately came and placed a mosquito repellent device.
Breakfast was excellent, with a wide variety of options including sushi, cold cuts, many types of fruit, several juices, a good coffee machine, Thai milk tea, and pastries. The pool area was clean and open from 7 AM to 7 PM.
The hotel is about 20 minutes from Jungceylon Mall and Bangla Road.
Overall, we had a very pleasant stay and left with great memories. I definitely recommend this hotel.
