Ammos Suites in Rethymno

Ammos Suites has a truly beautiful location right on Rethymno Beach, and the pool area is lovely — we really enjoyed our mornings there when the sun hit it. We stayed in three different rooms. The Executive City View (Room 201) was pretty, but unfortunately right above the communal village bins, which are emptied every night around 3 a.m. — not the hotel’s fault, but impossible to sleep through. After three nights of disturbed sleep, I spoke with reception, but found Ireni quite difficult to deal with. Changing rooms took a lot of back-and-forth, and it didn’t feel like she was particularly keen to help. The only option available was a Deluxe Seaview with Jacuzzi at an extra €100 per night, which felt steep after already paying £1,500 for the week. That room was lovely — beautiful terrace, sea views, and a comfy daybed — but our favourite was actually the Deluxe Seaview without Jacuzzi: calmer, stylish, and quieter. Housekeeping were wonderful — so kind and attentive — and the lady working in the bar/restaurant at breakfast time was absolutely lovely too. However, there were a few disappointing service moments. On one occasion, Felio approached us about having our own wine by the pool — she was polite, but it still felt a bit like a telling-off, particularly as there was no signage or mention of this policy at check-in. The barman, however, was extremely cold and rude. He tried to take the glasses we’d brought down from our room, impatiently telling us to pour our wine into the plastic pint cups he was holding. It all felt unnecessarily heavy-handed, especially as we were the only guests by the pool at the time. After that, we didn’t dare take our own drinks to the beach and ordered through bar service instead. On our second-to-last day, we ordered twice and then waited the best part of an hour to pay. The beach attendant was nowhere to be found, so we eventually had to walk back across to the hotel to locate him. When we did, he approached us saying we’d just left without paying and told reception to bill our room. It all felt a little accusatory and unnecessary — especially as they knew we were hotel guests — and could have been avoided had he simply been present at his post. Even when he was on the beach, he spent most of his time sitting in the shade on his phone with a coffee, rather than engaging with guests or offering service. Overall, a beautiful setting, lovely pool and kind housekeeping, but inconsistent customer service and a few management missteps meant it wasn’t as relaxing as we’d hoped. We loved Rethymno and would absolutely return — but sadly, not to Ammos Suites.
